That's a great way to put it. It reminds me of the banal observation that depressed people tend to be risk adverse and limited by their fears. Well, when you believe things rarely work out and that, when they do, they still aren't all that rewarding, why would you take risks?
To be fair though, I think the "normies" so to speak who report such a huge zest for life are also often full of shit. At the end of the day, everyone is more motivated by negative emotions than positive ones. It's what helped our ancestors survive, and it's what often makes us so miserable now.
So the next time someone waxes on about how they're pursuing their dream job or how much they love their romantic partner and how happy their vacation made them, take some time to read between the lines. You'll find a lot less to celebrate than what they might have you believe.
