That was my observation. Raw realism is predominant here. The collaborative and intellectual effort produced over the years is impressive. Many phrases have left an impression on me and have become my existential motto.

I haven't spent any time in chat, what do you mean exactly? Are people more guarded with what they say? Is that what you mean?

EDIT: I just went in there and understand what you mean now. It's like being in a bar.

Live Internet chats have always been shitty. Whether it was the chatrooms of olde or the modern Discord server, it's always been a pain in the arse to socialise like that and ultimately not worth it. And this is coming from an ultra-extrovert: it can work in real-life, as long as you're mentally stable or can to pretend to be, but it's just terrible through a screen.

Forums (except Reddit, fuck Reddit - even 4chan is a better overall experience if you avoid the worst parts - karma systems don't belong on forums if you actually want free speech) are vastly superior as you can actually have room to breathe and time to collect your thoughts. There's less time spent competing in a social arena and more time spent exchanging ideas. Of course, it's less social to post on a slow forum but, well, if you're actually trying to socialise on the Internet then you've already gone wrong at the first step anyhow.

I'm just here to discuss the practical side of mental health and suicide so the forum does its job for me well enough.

Sincerely,
CumbriaCTB

Great post - I used to frequent Reddit - I think the quality of discourse is highly dependent on the sub that you are on.

What are the practical things about mental health and suicide that interest you?

Subs that disable the karma system (no up/downvotes) are usually the better ones. The main problem with Reddit is that you get downvoted into oblivion if your opinion goes against the grain which then causes your reply to be buried at the very bottom if the page by default. Most subs end up as echochambers for this reason.

As for the practical side of things, it's mainly the prospect of recovery (or lack thereof) and the logistics of hanging oneself - naturally, these two things are very much connected. I learnt how to set up a full suspension hanging from here and I've done my part in sharing that knowledge as well so that others may make informed decisions regarding their bodily autonomy. It's also nice to know that therapy not working is a systemic issue and not just a matter of me "not trying hard enough" as the mainstream likes to claim.

Kind Regards,

There never was any connection. I have only went to the open chat a few times in the many years I've been a member, and each time it's just minors posting nudes, everyone being sexual, everyone being misogynistic.

The kind which makes you research "How do I report this to the police?".

Thanks for the reply.

I would agree with your assessment of the karma system. Valid opinions and facts aren't necessarily popular ones.

As to therapy, my personal issue with it is the lack of balance. I believe Western psychotherapy would be better served if it incorporated more spiritual aspects, especially when dealing with the abstract nature of thoughts and emotions.

And I'm not defining spiritual as religious. 2 different things in my view. I'm talking spiritual as in we all have the answers to our problems - it's a matter of looking inward and finding them, It takes effort, and unfortunately, for me at least, relying on a psychiatrist to "make you better" removes one's personal autonomy. Guidance, for sure, can be helpful, But people want a quick fix that "isn't too much work", hence medications and subconsciously expecting someone else to fix things.

Don't get me wrong, medications can be helpful, certainly, but I think they are relied on way too much and way over prescribed.
