Last week I ordered some sn from a Polish vendor.
I received a different bottle then expected from a different manufacturer as well.
The bottle states that it contains NANO2 with a corresponding CAS nr. but its description is Sodium nitrate (|||).
I asked the vendor why the name is different but Sodium nitrate ( ||| ) is the same as sodium nitrite, this checks out when I googled it.

I've just tested the SN via an aquarium test strip and both nitrate and nitrite immediately become pink, nitrite becomes dark pink while nitrate only has a slight pink discolorization.
So there is definately SN in there but aparently also nitrate.
Does this mean the SN I've ordered contains both nitriate and nitrate? Is this normal? Have you guys any experience with testing SN via aquarium test strips?
I've used tap water and not demi-water but I cannot imagine this would make any difference.

I used one of these test strips. The most left grey squares became pink immediately (as stated above).

Thanks in advance

I don't know much chemistry at all but I don't think sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite are the same at all. Not encouraging. Try the blood test and see if it easily makes blood change colour. Nitrate won't do it, only a good quantity of nitrite will. You still don't really know what percentage it is, but I think it'll be a better test than those strips

I tested my SN with the same aquarium strip tests and mine showed nitrite and nitrate as well. I targeted 10mg/l that should have revealed the darkest shade of pink on the strip for nitrite but unfortunatelly it didn't match, the shade was lighter, same for nitrate.
then I did a blood test and the blood reacted immediately and changed from red to brown but I am still in doubt because it wasn't the dark chocolate brown I've seen in other people's posts. my SN was not from IC or any known vendor here, it was bought locally with no guarantee it's pure nitrite and please don't ask me the source.
I guess I understand now why people order from IC.
I would like to see what the strip test shows when SN from IC is tested but no one posted this.
I would also be curious to do the same test with nitrate if I can get some and compare the results. I am sorry I can't be more useful, I am confused as well.

Thanks for the detailed answer. It's quite unfortunate that nobody with legit IC SN has tested their batch with these aquarium strips.
I will try to test my sn with some blood droplets tomorrow. I'm not so sure anymore if I want to use this batch.
The dark shade of pink was different for me when I used the second strip. The label states to apply the strip and then compare immediately because the colour fades after a short while.
My mixture was also more concentrated though.

But doesn't nitrate also cause MetHb (Methemoglobinemia)? Wouldn't that mean that sodium nitrate would also cause a sample of blood to darken to a "chocolate brown" or something?

I am desperately trying to understand this, but I don't even feel like I can think basic thoughts today, much less thoughts pertaining to science/biology. lol.

I'm not trying to attack you or say that you are wrong, btw; I'm only trying to gain a solid comprehension because SN is my chosen method. ❤

You're absolutely right to ask. I don't know is the answer. I just assumed the missing oxygen from nitrite makes it react (more?) with blood, so turns it brown. Just going by how everywhere I've read it's the best test you can do?

I appreciate your input. :) I think I'm going to buy a small portion of NaNO3 (nitrate, for those who may not know) so I can test it. I'll share whatever I discover, if people care to know?

Unless this has already been done? :)

Great idea. I don't recall this being done but I don't read everything here so idk

I did some research and found the following threads on SaSu:

There are more links inside as well.

Multiple people tested their sn with aquarium strips and all tests show pink colourization of both the NO2 (nitrite) and NO3 (nitrate) indicators.
Therefore, I think it's normal that both indicators will turn pink if the concentration is sufficient.
This makes me more at ease:ahhha:

@SorrowMind @jodes2
Great. :) I just purchased the nitrate (as well as some other chemistry gear, yay!), which will hopefully be here by this coming weekend.

@That_guy_in_IT
Thanks for posting those links for all of us to see :)

Ummm... That's not the conclusion I draw from that? This makes my head hurt! But my gut is telling me it's inconclusive since those strips only test for really small strengths of NO2 and NO3

What conclusion are you talking about? What I meant was that I'm not the only one with both indicators turning pink. This of course does not mean my sn is pure or anything but it gives some relief knowing I'm not the only one.

They shipped mine before I got a chance to send in my ID, but not sure if that was a one off
