If I told a GP would they have to tell my parents, I'm still in full time education (sixthform) and live with my parents, so would they have to know? I really don't want them to.

What will a GP even do/say when I tell them?

Cheers for any responses, I'm finally thinking about recovery.

I'm guessing from your wording that you're not in the US.

Depends on the risk. If your GP thinks you are a danger to yourself they must act on it/tell others.

In my experience, if you can make the promise your not doing anything they don't have to notify anyone. But idk if that would be the same for you.

Don't tell them you have a plan and add reasons why you wouldn't go through with it. Don't have a specific method in mind except something really vague. That can usually put your GP at ease. Mileage may vary based on individual GP personality.

Hi, I don't know what GPs do when you are 16. You could call Young Minds or Mind or maybe CALM if you are male (which is for boys/men) to ask their advice. There is some medication sometimes used for teenagers but if it is depression, you may be safer looking into St John's Wort (which is not good for mania). Unfortunately wanting to die is very common and growing among young people.. mental health services are oversubscribed. So the sooner you get on the list the better. I hope your GP is supportive. If your parents are kind, it is worth telling them so they can also support you. I hope you get good support and that you feel better. I'm sorry if my message is a bit direct, my depression is hitting me this morning.
You can buy St John's Wort in health food store or Boots. I believe it is safer for teenagers than medication. I don't know for sure. But that would be my first call.

If you're 18 or older normally doctors can't inform your parents since you're an adult. If you are under 18 you're in violation of the age requirement of this forum:

"By using this site, you represent, acknowledge, and agree that you are at least 18 years of age, that you do not have intellectual disabilities, and that you have read and agreed with our rules and policies."

Yes, I am 18 but in sixth form so I didn't know if that counts as a child, and also I live with my parents, so I'd understand if they'd need to be informed.

If you're 18, it doesn't matter.
You're legally an adult and free to do as you wish without your parents consent. You'll just have to own the consequences.

Your GP is not allowed to share what you tell him with anyone unless :
1/ there's an immediate danger to yourself
2/ there's an immediate danger to others
3/ you inform him of potential child abuse. (Current, past or planned)

Just be careful how you word your suicidal ideation. Avoid saying anything that can be interpreted as " I'll do it soon after walking out of here" that's a direct trip to psych ward.

Good words/advice............although I told both my GP and Police who I was going to kill even and they didn't bat an eyelid..............just told to go ahead and they'd clear up the mess................Good old Britain...............this was about 20 years ago but reckon things got worse..............had no help at all when i was suicidal to the point of serious revenge on my ex and others............then they wonder why Prisons are full to bursting.
Was my mum in the end who pulled me through..........cant wait to join her, dad and others in the next world.
