Is it possible to unhook yourself from the instructor when tandem skydiving?

You can, but not so fast.

If you keep patient in joining a skydiving club, after a while (gaining jumping experience), you'll be let on your own and then you'll be able to. This is upon availability, affordability and physical ability on your part.

It is dangerous to do the way you intend, with another person right on to you, witnessing it, and on your first try - you'd be under a lot of pressure and SI is almost certain to kick in and aomething tells me a lot of this attempt can go wrong.

Yeah, I figure the instructor could try to stop you and you'd be in big trouble when you landed. Solo skydiving courses are expensive though.

It wouldn't be easy and the tandem partner would likely try to stop you. Plus think of the trauma it would cause the person that was supposed to be looking after you....

An alternative would be to become qualified enough to jump solo and then not open your shoot. Interesting idea.

Well, maybe within a few tandem jumps you could go alone?

I have my skydiving license although I haven't jumped in quite a few years. I went through the AFF program which is a minimum of 8 jumps and cost me somewhere around £2000.

I did a tandem jump before my AFF and can say that you're hooked on pretty well so there's no real possibility of being able to get out of it.

Yeah the same would apply to bungee jumping... that would also harm the company

During your AFF first jump, after the instructors pull your chute and let go are you able to remove your chute midair?

You can pull the cutaway, however there is likely to be an RSL (reserve static line) that would immediately deploy the reserve parachute. There is also the AAD which is switched on on the ground and would detect if you're falling too fast below a specific altitude, and automatically deploy the reserve.

You can't just remove the chute from your body?

You could undo the chest strap and try to fall out I guess, although you could get caught up in the leg loops and have a really bad time... There are lots of ways it could end up not working properly and leaving you banged up

This is a really interesting thread. Been thinking about this for ages (though wouldn't be my choice if Ctb as don't like heights) and was curious about the mechanics.

You guys have answered every question I had. Cheers!

After high school i wanted to kms so i took lessons to jump solo (2 days of training and end of day 2 we jump).

Instructors hold onto leg strap on ur jumpsuitbut are not physically attached.

I must have jumped at a strange angle or something but i tumbled upon jumping.

Instructors could not physically hold the leg straps due to me tumbling. They did as trained and pulled my cord and had to let go.

As the shoot opened since i was tumbling the cord tangled on itself.

Even tho the whole reason i did it was to increase my odds of dying it was scary af. Panic set in and i tried with all my might to untangle the line.

After doing that for 30 sec i got it untangled :( i did have a reserve shoot on me but free falling with a tangled shoot for 30 sec made me "want to live".

Here i am 10 years later and i still wanna kms. In them 10 yrs i started a business and make lots of money now. Business has grown alot every year i am shocked by how much it has grown. But deep down i still wanna kms and last yr i purchased a nitrogen tank.

Needless to say thats the way i will prob die. Im physically healthy and make a fuck ton of money but still live with my mom cus my fucked up brain cant picture a different life.

I can prob find a girl if i wanted (even if she is just into my money and not into me) but feels pointless.

Last week i filled a large plastic bag with nitrogen and took it in my car and inhaled it. Wasnt ready to die but wanted to experience being close to death.

That was ALOT easier then jumping and free falling to ones death in my opinion
