Wondering if anyone has any experience with use of supplements to either treat depression or how to help get life in order.

I started taking loads of omega 3 recently like 10 tablets a day and it's made getting stuff done so much easier. It also shuts my brain off so I can just sit and think without thinking anything, which I realise I've never done. Maybe this is what relaxing is?oh to be neurotypical.

I've also heard good things about B12 and magnesium threonate especially relating to autism. Wonder if you guys have experience with any depression supplements.

I don't really know about how it relates to autism, but I've had good experiences with B12. The teacher of my nutrition class in high school gave me a bottle and told me to take those because she noticed I was depressed (my reputation preceded me I guess lol). I've been taking it on and off since then, it's been more than ten years. I use it when I know I will need energy and a clearer head, but that means I start them days in advance if I can because it's not something I immediately see and feel the results of. I wouldn't say it treated my depression because that's still there, but it makes days easier to get through. I always feel like I'm in a better mood generally especially with the extra energy, so I recommend it and hope you have good luck with it if you try.

Look into whether you have a folate deficiency. L-methylfolate supplements might help.

I posted this book the other day, I think there are chapters on depression and autism.


Folate is an important piece of the puzzle but its really complicated, its the wrong thing for some people. Its a whole rabbit hole of information revolving around something called MTHFR

I recommend searching that site for more books, here are a few more



I also recommend mining reddit and facebook groups for answers.

The best thing of all is to find a qualified health practicioner. I've never really looked myself, but I've been lost in the supplement/herb world for a few years, I guess I'm just a little too disorganized and short on follow through. But you don't want to waste years trying to figure this stuff out and fail. The answers are there somewhere.

My basic take on herbs and supplements is that you should research them long enough to understand the likely side effects. They basically all have them. Understand the interactions, hormonal effects (many are 5ar inhibitors for example) liver metabolism, etc. Its all a mess. There is no free lunch with any of it, trust me. Supplements are also downstream from diet, exercise and sleep for depression.

I really recommend good quality canned oysters for the Zinc selenium and DHA (a really important type of Omega 3) and quality canned sardines from morthern oceans. Clean seafoods are medicinal.

Well, for herbal medicine there is St. John's Wort… but you need to be careful with that one because it can interact with certain kinds of prescription medications.
A lot of people swear by it though. If you have a Russian store near you, you can find an herbal medicine called NovoPassit, but again you need to check for interactions.

Some people take the amino acid called L-tyrosine for depression. There is also a supplement called 5-htp that helps some people.

In the past, I have used Bach flower essences and although they are quite subtle, they usually do have an effect. These are specifically designed to work on your emotions.

The absolute best remedies in my opinion are essential oils. It's trial and error until you find the one(s) that work best for you. I diffuse them and also take them internally.

I'm not a doctor by any means, but these are some things I have learned from many years of trying to find a cure for my depression.

I used to take St John's Wort and 5HTP and I think they did help a bit. As @Heavenbound said though- St John's wort can mess up other medications- so, it's important to read all the warnings.
