I tried to CTB a few nights ago by jumping from the top floor of a 12 floor building. Secruity intervened and I was arrested. The police put me in touch with a psychiatric nurse who said I wasn't entitled to treatment since I'm not registered with a GP. After spending a night in the cells a doctor asked me some questions about how I was feeling and why I did what I did. Then I was released.

There's really nothing stopping me from trying again, which is a good thing from my perspective but it's pretty pathetic from a preventionist point of few. I never imagined that someone could try to kill themselves publicy and that there would be no reaction whatsoever from mental health services. Literally no one wants to deal with it and no one cares

That is actually a positive thing, I'd say. We don't want to be saved after all.

I'm sorry for what happened to you, it seems very painful and traumatic as a situation. In view of your story, I have the impression that these people resemble a little the pro-life reasoning: to keep the person alive at all costs even if it means imprisoning him. Then let her down, no matter what happens to her next. It doesn't matter that she is in pain.
I also think that the suicidal question is quite complex, people do not want to dwell on it, to listen to people in pain because it scares them. They do not imagine that a person wants to die. But it is indeed surprising on the part of members of the medical profession.

I don't know what to advise you, I hope you will be better in the future and find peace. I send you all my prayers.

That does shock me too. You'd think they'd implement some means of following up with you to see if you're OK. I'm SO naive though. I went on a course of Fluoextine (Prozac) a few years back. I actually thought once the course ended there would be some kind of follow up or just a phone call to see if I was still alive. Lol. I guess they expect us to do all the leg work and to pester them if things aren't improving. Gone are the days when doctors knew (and cared about) the members in their community. I guess there are just so many of us now and so many people are depressed- perhaps it's the new normal.

To ignore an actual attempt though. That's pretty negligent. I'm sorry.

I see any form of suicide prevention as only prolonging suffering personally. Those people just want to force others to endure this existence against their wishes but they don't care in any way, that is the way that pro lifers typically are, it's not surprising.

But I disagree with the idea of suicide prevention, I believe that the right to die should always be respected and people should be able to go through with their plans to leave without the fears of being stopped by someone else. If someone wants to take control over a life that they never asked for and prevent all future suffering, then there is nothing wrong with that. Staying alive is only delaying our inevitable fate anyway which is to die.

Here in the US, for many, many months now, there has been a national campaign aimed at preventing suicides, and focused on mental health, in general. There are segments on all of the news networks devoted to the "mental health crisis" in America, and lots of PSA's on TV on the subject, nearly as many as the annoying Medicare Coverage Helpline commercials. It really started when Biden got into office. I think it's something he viscerally believes in and it goes to the core of his religious beliefs. They're even going further, now, and doing something, improving maybe, access to 24/7 care, whatever that may entail. I've never utilized any of it, and have no intention of doing so, I so can't comment on whether treatment is better, more available, etc. Honestly, though, I think the US and the UK are very similar in many ways, and I doubt any care here, or access to care, would be any better than that in the UK. Maybe they all just need to make it appear like they're trying to do something because of public outcry?

I'm sorry you didn't receive the care you deserve. If someone attempting a suicide doesn't warrant intervention, then exactly what does?

It really is a joke! I jumped off a 300ft cliff but because I landed on a ledge instead of falling the whole way, I didn't die and just broke my back. For some reason my attempt wasn't taken seriously even though if it wasn't for pure luck I'd be dead. I wasn't even in hospital for a day before they sent me home to parents(I was over 18) so they could supervise me instead.

I went to a walk-in crisis clinic asking for help. I left w/ an appointment for two weeks later w/ what I thought would be a psychiatrist who could prescribe antidepressants. It wasn't. Was told I had to see a therapist several times and my case would be presented to a psychiatrist to be approved to be seen and evaluated for medication... in about 6 weeks. I walked out when they said they wanted to create a "safety plan" for suicidal thoughts. I've been keeping myself "safe" daily with no help. I've been suicidal for about a year after a traumatic few years and extremely suicidal for the last few months. Now I'm working on my suicide plan. Won't make the mistake of thinking there's help again. Nobody cares if you're ok. They just want you to stay alive so THEY can feel better about it.

I have to agree that mental health 'help' in this country (and probably many if not most others) is non existent and a myth. My last 'care coordinator', assigned after a short unwanted hospitalisation last year, was an absolute joke. Every single time we arranged to meet he would call to reschedule, sometimes twice. Altogether I saw him maybe 4 times and it's been a year now. He just totally dropped off the radar, never contacted me again, never informed me he was closing my case, nothing. I've discovered since then that I am doing better by staying away from the depressing shit show of the 'services', especially hospital. I'm grateful he helped me out by backing my disability benefit claim at least but otherwise he was completely unprofessional, odd considering he'd been in quite a senior position in the mental health team for decades.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Might get a little better treatment at a "fancy" in-patient facility if you're rich and/or have great health insurance. A "little" - as long as the money keeps flowing to the facility. Wonder if the food is good at such places?
