As we all know, depression isn't caused by a failure to lay there for 3 hours on a daily basis with cucumber over your face, while an orange woman massages your feet.
But what stupid things do people suggest as a way to feel better?

I'll kick it off:

- "You need to look at it from a different perspective".
Ok Julia, I'm facing homelessness, have no money or job despite trying, and have been clinically depressed for years and am not getting any help. What perspective would you like me to look at this from?

- "You just need to stop thinking so negatively".
My life is making me feel negative.
My life isn't the way it is because I'm having 'the wrong thoughts'.

I firmly believe drug and alcohol addiction are NOT diseases - they're symptoms, usually of undiagnosed mental health issues.
But if people can conquer their addictions by believing they're diseases, more power to them.

Totally agree with this. Its that old question. Do people drink because they are depressed, or are they depressed because they drink ?
It is what it is. I fucking hate that saying it doesnt add nothing to a situation and is a waste of words.

"You deserve to be happy. It will happen."

This makes me crazy! I don't deserve to be happy, as evident in a miserable life in which it hasn't happened. It might as well be a tattered bumper sticker on a rusty old car.

i hate this one especially. you can't use another person's suffering to say that another person shouldn't be suffering. that's stupid. people will feel pain regardless of whether or not somebody has it worse than them.

unless karen is working to solve every single issue in the world ever, i don't want to hear it.

Knowing that there are people in a worse situation was supposed to make you feel good? Because, wow... It terrifies me.

It makes me furious, I hear it every day, and from people who don't even know about my personal life...

Honestly, I think I agree with you. I've never heard of a "normal, happy" person falling into addiction. It's generally those afflicted with trauma, extreme unhappiness, mental illness, etc.
'Have you thought about changing your diet/exercising more?'

Well fuck me, why didn't I think of that before.
Yessss. This pisses me off more than the mindset shit. I've tried both and they haven't helped me, I'm so tired of having them suggested to me.

I agree, I started srinking to try and deal with the emotional and other stress in my life, I didn't get the stress because I drank, I drank because of the stress, and I think it's the same for most others too.

Sometimes you don't even realise that there is stress there that you're trying to cover up.

I work 12hr nights in a glass factory. When I get home I feel like I got heat stroke at least twice every shift after dragging a bus through a Vietnamese swamp. That shit advice is whack.

I have a decent job and I'm here right along with everyone else. It doesn't give you a sense of purpose if the only purpose you can see in it is generating money for the office-dwelling Elysian denizens who haven't known a day of work in their entire lives. To those lucky folks, all of us are worthless scum, disability or not.

Exactly! God, I can't believe how naive the "professionals" can be.

Actually, there was a point in time for me where that could've worked to my amazement. That ship has long since sailed, though.
