I usually use my computer to visit this site but tried to on my phone the other day and realised it's blocked by my mobile phone provider. This seems pretty extreme doesn't it? Does anyone else have a similar story from another part of the world?

For reference I'm from Australia and I'm with Optus.

Vodafone in the UK used to have it blocked on their 4G until very recently, I had to go through TOR Browser if I was out of my home and wanted access to the site.

In the UK SS is blocked by default as mobile providers are obliged to operate an "opt-in" system for what is deemed adult content. If you have an account with them then you'll find the option to enable adult content which will turn on sites like SS. I don't know about Australia specifically without looking it up unfortunately.

The other solution is to use a VPN or even a normal proxy service to access the site.

And how do you sign up? I was able to use it on another provider but honestly a telecoms provider telling an adult what they can look at? What the hell? It is just so wrong.

What's your mobile provider Benjamind? If you let me know then one of us can post a link for you, or if you're wary about disclosing that info then just google "<mobile provider> adult content filter" or drop a PM. You can also punch the website in here: https://www.blocked.org.uk to check whether or not it's currently blocked on your provider (UK providers).

If you're interested, the Open Rights Group has a really in-depth document talking about this 'soft-censorship' across different countries:

I already signed up so no problem but I hope others can sign up so they can chat on here. I am not interested in methods as much because I know how to get N from outside sources but have decided to carry on for now - at least until the next major mental health crisis.

Oh, you were talking about signing up to SS. Well, you would just have to register using WiFi or unblock adult content on your mobile plan first. If you did the former, then you could use a VPN or proxy (no need for TOR) to continue to access the site unblocked over mobile data.

I shouldn't have to unblock adult content cuz I'm an adult...but I'm with Optus on my iPad Pro and Vodafone with my Android phone.
Its not about adult content its about censorship...like the way some major search engines have blocked search results for harm reduction sites like Bluelight.

Paternalistic and unacceptable.

I completely agree with you! It's soft-censorship and even if you agree that children should be shielded from content like pornography this isn't the way to go about doing it (I firmly believe it should be a parent's decision, not a mass censorship scheme imposed on adults and children alike). That's the law in the UK unfortunately and sick though it is there's not a lot we can do except support the lobbying groups like the ORG.

Unblocking adult content:

Vodaphone (UK folk):

I don't think Optus has content filtering by default since this is a UK law.

Yeah... This site was "blocked" in Australia after a dude in Western Australia ctb last year. Interestingly enough, it was the first time the AFP (Australian FBI), have heard of SS.

That being said, the block is rather weak. Alterting the DNS is enough to get around the block.
