I told him about my insomnia, and he gave me a lecture about how "if you were motivated enough to fix it, you could!!" who needs meds anyway right? you just have to be in the right state of mind!! soon after this, we got into a discussion about my bad experiences with therapists, and to this he responded, "well, therapy won't work unless YOU want it to work. :)" totally invalidated and dismissed everything I said while subtly placing the blame onto me. oh, and I got multiple lectures about how I'm not "hopeful" enough. lol

I'm sorry for your experience. Though at least from my own experience doctors shrugging off insomnia or refusing to treat it isn't too surprising.

They just love avoiding doing their jobs lol. I always told myself that if I ever found the will to live, I'd become a GP or a therapist because they do fuck all and get paid. occasionally gaslight people. damn, I'd be a professional

yeah, why is that? I guess it's safer to just not do anything than prescribe a potentially addictive medication. I've always found that stupid though. the druggies are going to get their drugs no matter what- it's easier to buy them off the street. the only people they're hurting by refusing to prescribe are the people who actually need medication.

how on earth do you 'try' to sleep. Insomnia is torture. It's not like people with insomnia don't want to sleep.

It's crazy how this people can prescribe you the worst of the worst for a cold and in another breath completely dismiss a disease that actually really needs help.

"Have you tried turning the router on and off? :-)" ā€” "No, my computer is burning."

It sucks that a lot of the time with things like these you have to get like 'lucky' with finding a good GP, therapist or other things like that. Sucks that so many of them seem to not care at all and just disregard people's problems so easily

I'm very familiar with that.
Like, my brother in Christ, if you get paid fat money to sit there, not having me explain and feel undeerstood, just to kick me out less than 5 minutes after walking in, you're not deserving of your position. They don't even try to help.

I had a similar experience as you when I first told one of my GPs about my Insomnia asking for help with meds. His suggestion was for me to exercise... when I was having trouble gaining weight due to my gastral reflux disease and at the time undiagnosed coeliac disease. X____x It's seems they're only willing to give you meds that can be used as off-label treatment for insomnia like Mirtazapine.

Healthcare systems are a mess everywhere, too many stories like this, people just get "treated" as fast as possible, theres not enough healthcare workers and individually dedicated healthcare. Only if you have the money to get private care you finally get listened to.

Exactly. There's a private psychiatrist in my town that goes for $900 an hour or something absurd, and he's booked until early 2024. to me that perfectly sums up the state of public healthcare.

Healthcare systems are unfortunately like that. You can't just magically stop having insomnia one day. I can't imagine what insomnia is like as sleeping is the only time I feel at peace in life. At the same time, the cost is unreasonably high. Perhaps you can consider changing your GP. Anyways, I wish you luck.

That's how you know this world is fucked up. When a caretaker can be this way.

There are many healthcare workers you know. The problem is there are not enough health care SLAVES. But many people learn healthcare but do not subject themselves to the horrible working conditions. From my perspective the cause of this or perhaps a cause, is capitalism and capitalism caused by overpopulation. Higher vibrations we need. Less selfishness all around. Don't hate the player, hate the game because the game has been rigged. But again I get if you hate the player for continuing the game. Somebody has to address the problems and not be shamed for them(by group think or cultural conditioning like how the US for decades fantasized capitalism when we know that it is unfair) because those who we have put in power seem to hear our complaints and just have it go through one ear and come out the other. As PrinceEA once said, these problems are not political, they're parental. "Parents, do you love your children? If you do, please leave them an actual world to grow up in." Healthcare is not the main problem. Education is not the main problem. Politics is not the main problem. Not even the awfully disgusting financial system is the main problem. The problem is Self-Love. Ask yourself the following questions, would someone who loved themself:

1. Bring a child into a world of suffering instead of adopting?
2. Subject themselves to wage slavery?
3. Put work above themself?
4. Support a financial system and government that undermines them?
5. Engage in religious dogma when we know the division it causes?
6. Cut down trees and overconsume animals to extinction?
7. Fight against merciful and dignified death for those suffering?
8. Be mute on the suffering of others?
9. Engage in financial reward searching and career climbing?
10. Show off material wealth to those around them?
11. Justify cruel systems such as capitalism?
12. Enslave their fellow man from 8-4 and feel justified in doing so?
13. Be away from your children for 12 hours 5 days a week for 18 years of their life?
14. Live life based on group think rather than for themself?
15. Toss their trash anywhere for others to deal with?
16. Go to school for 20 years only to be put on a day shift?
17. Stigmatize mental health and mental illness?
18. Place persons with disabilities on the sidelines?
19. Engage in unhealthy competition?
20. Engage in transactional relationships?
21. Joke about sexual orientations outside of their own?
(will go on when I think of others)

It's torture, imagine being conscious for days at a time. Life becomes a continuously rolling nightmare. After a couple of months of it I tried a few other meds before mirtazapine finally helped me sleep. Still on it now.

That person just sounds so insensitive, to me it's not even surprising that people act in such a way. Humans can certainly be so cruel with how they invalidate and dismiss suffering, people who work in healthcare aren't caring at all, in fact they just want money and they just want to get rid of their patients as quickly as possible. There really is a lack of respect towards suffering people in this world, this is just the unfortunate reality.

Mirtazapine is a godsend I have never slept as well on any other drug.

OP, if your doctor don't listen, find a new one. Sadly some people think insomnia isn't real. If he actually wanted to help he would give you some relief temporarily (sleeping meds) while trying to find the cause. It's your body, you are the only one who knows what it feels like. If everything could be fixed by just trying harder then we wouldn't need any medications.

Yes I've heard this before. And several people have said to me 'eventually you'll be so tired you'll fall asleep'.

It doesn't work like that - you can't switch your brain off when suffering with extreme anxiety.
