Sodium nitrate can be used to synthesize sodium nitrite (SN). I can't really get my hands on it though.

I am able to get iron (III) nitrate. So I thought I could maybe mix an iron (III) nitrate solution with a sodium hydroxide solution, causing iron (III) hydroxide to precipitate out. If I then filter out the solid stuff and crystalize the filtrate, I should be left with sodium nitrate.

Can any chemist confirm if this is a sound plan?

The nitrate part should work, it doesn't need heat or anything.

Just mix the solutions together and iron hydroxide will precipitate out by itself.

I assume you already know how to make NaNO2 from NaNO3, and the risks associated with using your own Nitrite.

Thanks for your answer. May I ask, what are the risks associated with using one's own nitrite? I'm guessing it's the possibility of a not high enough purity or potential presence of harmful impurities?

I remember there was a guide on here about testing the purity of SN. You can do an experiment and test it against that.
