When I was a teenager I did cadets. In the cadet organisation I belonged too there was some troubled kids from different schools who were part of programme. These kids were on the programme because they were referred to it by their social worker or school. The purpose was to improve their bad behaviour. Some these kids also were in my class at school. The troubled kids had issues with mental illness, some were in the foster care system, one of them was in a criminal gang, others had issues with drugs and so much more.
The cadet staff leaders were older people who believed in discipline and were strict. There were nice people who genuinely cared for young people but their disciplinarian approach were not popular and sometimes went too far. This did led to massive arguments breaking out with the troubled kids in conflict with the cadet staff.
The troubled kids on the cadet programme some did change however many others did not. These kids ended up leaving the programme eventually and contiuned getting into trouble and in problems all the time. One boy I knew who was in a gang he got kicked out of the programme because of his attitude and he continued to live the gang lifestyle. Another boy I knew he got expelled from cadets for bringing drugs to a summer camp.
Social institutions and society generally are not equipped to deal with troubled young people which is why teen suicide and young adult remains a huge problem. When it comes to troubled young people schools are made to take on huge responsibilities on child welfare that really belong to parents however there is too many irresponsible, lazy, negligent and selfish parents that choose not to care for their kids. The mental health care system is broken young people are unable to get treatment. In addition there is a stigma of being a troubled young person in which people generally will avoid troubled people and have prejudices towards them. This social exclusion will push young people to join suicide forums because when people are lonely and excluded it is natural they will seek a community who will understand them.
