Help SN shelf life question .

Hello everyone, I have a question, anybody here knows if you transfer your sodium nitrite from hes original container into an airtight glass jar, Will it alter his shelf life ? And does the shelf life can be longer than the original experation date ?

Well, I do not got so much knowledge about SN, but my guessing is that no, it won't. to transfer from plastic to glass, I do not see any problem.
Expiration date should be much longer, It is a salt.

But as I say you, You wait another opinions from experts about SN, because it is easy thing that I was wrong about.

Couldn't you just put the actual container in something airtight? I'm no SN expert either

Officially you need to storage it in a dry, cool, dark and ventilated place, so better keep it in the official bottle.
It's also better to keep it closed till you gonna use.

I know, its Just that i wanted to put it in other containers in different places in case I lose the original you know. Since its harder to obtain now..

I have read a post from a member who bought N in powders in 2013 and a few weeks ago, he tested his N and it had 69% de purity.

If you keep your SN in good conditions, could spending years and years and it still would working properly.

I found a link on a forum with some useful information. But i still wanna hear a scientific reassure me that its okay. Im Just stressing out a bit, i dont want to make any stupide mistakes...

Just thinking out loud here ... but if one were to open a sealed bottle of SN well before they decide to use it, would it help if a couple of packets of silica gel were put back into the bottle before replacing the lid? It's just that if my plan to buy a sealed bottle of SN fails, I may need to buy some that is shipped in a plastic bag. I'd then need to repackage it into a suitable container, and figure that silica gel might be a way to remove moisture and therefore prolong the SN's shelf life.

Is SN bottle sealed?........I really I don not know it. I just have read one death case report using SN and the guy had SN into a plastic bag.
I think to avoid moisture, better idea is keeping in dry spot and guess there will be a recommended temperature.

If it comes direct from the manufacturer, it should come in a sealed bottle. If it's from a reseller that buys in bulk and then repackages, then it'll probably come in a plastic bag.

My concern is even if the SN is kept in a cool dry place, a zip-lock plastic baggie may still allow moisture to get into the SN (albeit quite slowly). That's why - if I'm forced to buy SN from a supplier that repackages into such bags - I'd be inclined to repackage the SN into a bottle with a couple of silica gel packets placed on top of the SN before I seal it up.

I think that better way is into a glass recipient, 20 to 24 or 25 C (sorry IDK Farenheit degrees), convenient closed and a dry spot, it's always so important avoiding moisture. All of them for a longer term.
About silica gel, I am not sure if that will be helpful or not......

Why dont you order another bottle of SN, so you can open one and experiment with that one, and keep the other one closed?

I've ordered both sealed and unsealed SN, mainly because the sealed stuff is coming from overseas and I'm concerned it might not make it to me (I've already had one bottle taken out during transit; not because of Customs, but because of a meddling freight forwarder). The unsealed SN was ordered from a local supplier, therefore it's all but guaranteed to arrive.

My SN will be going into a cool, dark place. It'll be packed in a small Coleman cooler with an added lining of styrofoam. As for the silica gel, I can't see why it wouldn't work: it's used to take moisture out of food and vitamins that are packed, and I figure it shouldn't taint the SN ... after all, if silica gel was capable of adding some taint (for want of a better expression), why would be it be used in items designed for human consumption?
