Warning: the following story could ruin your day.
I know that warning seems inane in a place where tales of gloom are shared every day but this one's particularly shitty and tanked my mood when I came across it and would do so again.
So about a year and a half ago, a 20-year-old college student was riding the train back from his internship in Chicago when he was struck by a stray bullet. It struck in the neck and the ultimate result was that he was rendered permanently completely incapacitated. However, his brain wss still working fine so he was fully aware of his fate. He was given the choice to continue on like that or to have life support ended. As a highly independent person he naturally chose to go home. I don't even think they located the shooter. So this is a of course a terrible story, a drop in the ocean of suffering for the more cynical among us. I was reflecting on this incident the other day and I had some realizations. He had to contemplate the sudden end of his life. He was forced to commit and embrace death. And if this poor, poor boy, who probably had a thousand dreams and aspirations (judging from the information shared about him), had the fortitude to do that, then I, with no dreams and aspirations and who has never felt the good things compensated for the bad but who has an unacceptable quality of life too, then I can summon the fortitude to.
Anyway I really think this represents a shift in the battle against SI. I know the whole "they did it so you should be able to" way of thinking isn't very helpful, but I don't think what I shared is quite that.
