The laws in euthanasia-friendly countries require the patient to take the burden of proving to others his case is worthy of euthanasia .
What do you think about doctors proactively being able to prescribe death as optional treatment to their patients ?
While the upsides are obvious , do consider some possible downsides .

Possible downsides :
- Sadist doctors may use it to prescribe death to relatively healthy people .
- Getting the estimate of someone's health wrong while prescribing death .
- Patient pretending to be sicker than he is in hopes of acquiring a prescription .

What do you think ?

I think there needs to be at least one more second opinion to back up the original. The sadistic doc downside comment made me think twice on that. Because there would be some that would do it for whatever their thinking is.

Yes to option 1. People should not be forced to live against their will.

Absolutely, it's absurd to me the whole view that people should be stopped from dying with dignity as the reality is that we are all just waiting around to die anyway, all humans deserve to have the option to exit peacefully on their own terms and it's inhumane to deny people that, none of us are obligated to continue existing here.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say- I don't think a doctor should be able to decide whether I have the right to have assistance in dying...

Don't get me wrong- I'm not for NO assessments happening. I think they should be undertaken by people who are trained to assess mental competancy though. These professionals need to be connected to a team of specialist support workers- doctors, therapists, community workers, legal experts- who CAN provide EFFECTIVE help for people who want it.

For me- this is the ideal: Anyone over the age of 18 of sound mind should be able to apply for assisted dying. (Younger if debhilitating medical conditions are present.) A six month waiting period should be in place- to prevent impulsive attempts and to offer people help who want it. (I don't think their assisted suicide should be contingent on them accepting that help though.) I also think it would be better if families were informed and ideally that they were in support of the decision.

I think doctors have too much power over us as it is. They're working with big pharmaceutical companies which in turn fund our governments. They have a vested interest in prolonging suffering. Plus- it isn't fair on them either really. They've been programmed to save life. I doubt they want to get a reputation for ending it. 'Dr Death' immediately springs to mind if it seems they are referring too many patients! No- I think assisted suicide clinics should be separate to medicine and employ specialist people. I guess I'm more open when it comes to gate keeping assisted suicide. I don't think it should ONLY be for the chronically ill and I don't think someone in a white coat should have that much control over MY life- or death.

Absolutely anyone (regardless of: age/health/gender/etc.) should be allowed to die painlessly, whenever they want. And there would be no need for waiting periods/medical approval/etc.

That's a tough question here and suggestions how this could work have been made here already. It's mainly about patients who are in treatment already but what about the people who just want to leave this world because they don't see a future for them but have no health issues at all yet? They might not be sick now but not seeing a future (incl. other things) can make sick as well. I doubt that even the most liberal assisted suicide law will cover those people and their will.

There should be peaceful methods for everyone without restrictions (N ??) because it's very difficult to overcome SI in any case even though it's an easy and painless method. If there's the slightest hope left I'm pretty sure most people will step back and rethink their decision for the moment.
