If I did it in the head, I would put it in my mouth and try to aim towards the brain stem. That would be I believe a 15 degree angle upwards, but just due to how long the gun is, I realized it's hard to do it at any angle that isn't 45 degrees upwards. I'm not sure if that's too high or not. It's a muzzleloader as opposed to a shotgun.

Although hitting the brain stem is fatal, my fear would be something going wrong and ending up paralyzed or even a vegetable.

So I thought about going for the heart. Only concern is if it would be easier to save me.

What are your thoughts?

Also I know I'm obsessing over this method, so thank you everyone for being patient with me.

Edit: Thank you for your input everyone.

As far as I know, the heart is not a very easy target. Your ribcage can get in the way. If your gun is powerful enough, the brain stem is much better.

Head with good research and planning would probably be the best. I think heart would be tricky, esp with a long gun.

As with any method, I would do this in a place where you will not be found for a while if that's possible so if you don't die instantly you'll die from the injury.

I would take something lethal before shooting yourself in your head. As in try to OD and blow yourself into the next. I would think if anything the person finding me and is worried about pieceing me together more than what is already creeping through my system. Complicate the chances of survival or buy an accomodating gun.

Good point. I think I would do my heart as well.

Addressing being found though. Just go find a place not to be found easily. Leave a note, schedule email/text, or snail mail someone your corpse location. Make sure you do it before they get it though.

Wouldn't you worry about final minutes of agony and pain from the heart? That plus hydrostatic shock would hurt.

I think head would be the way to go, after an OD like @planktoplank said.

Every failed suicide by firearm I have seen (four of them and only one successful) has been because the attempter was intoxicated and could not get off a strait shot.

To the head. Hold the gun directly level with the ground in your mouth against the bask of your throat. Instantly fatal every time.

It is not easy to do though. I sucked on the barrel of my pistol every night for six months and never pulled the trigger. And back then I was way worse off than I am now.

Good luck.

In the alternate history I am writing, a main character (British Prime Minister H.H. Asquith) shoots himself in the heart with a revolver in 1915 after his love letters to Venetia Stanley (the letters were full of state secrets and WWI military strategy, and even occasionally written during Cabinet meetings) were published. (Yes, I know that Asquith lived until 1928 and died of natural causes, and that Asquith's letters to Venetia Stanley were not published until 1982: this is an alternate history that I am writing.) What kind of revolvers available in 1915 would be best with which to shoot oneself in the heart? What caliber?

Many thanks.

The British Webley .455 revolver was both very common in 1915 and very powerful so there's your answer...but this is a rather odd place to come for literary advice!

Thanks. I find this place useful for almost anything I can think of
