None of this is real anyway. Our brains are rendering "reality" on the fly and nothing exists outside of consciousness.

Or rather, consciousness itself doesn't exist and is made up on the fly by our brain programs.

I slept 3 hours today. Typical.

I've always hated my brain for betraying me...

I recite this sometimes to console myself, and it's absolutely true (as far as we can so far tell). Sadly it only offers so much comfort against the trauma of life.

Edit: Being a materialist, I think that stuff does exist outside of consciousness, but matter without any consciousness to experience it, is basically nothingness.

Recently read a book on consciousness. The takeaway: there's no such 'thing', but is a kind of compartmentalized, parallel-processing machine giving the impression of cohesion; I guess "I" goes out to the trashbin along with free will!

As someone with DID, that's just perfect! LOL

I was a theology geek (two degrees) but was never drawn to Philosophy. Maybe I should pull out my old textbooks...

A lot of Thomas Aquinas?

Philosophy is a means of passing the time. It doesn't necessarily bring solace, for me at least. Stoicism has seemingly helpful advice, but it dissipates as soon as the book is put down. Buddhism has a similar problem. The only way around that I suppose is to join a monastery.

I was an Orthodox theology student. More Palamas and Greek and Russian writers. Funny you mention the monastery. That was my path at one point. Now I don't even think I'm Christian.
