Find it quite amusing when people say suicide is selfish. Like isn't it more selfish of people to try and force others to stay alive when they clearly are just miserable and suffering. Then I guess that there is some amount of selfishness in wanting to end ones existence to escape the endless suffering of life when it leaves your loved ones hurt. When it just leads to more suffering to a certain degree. But for the people that end their existence due to them feeling like a burden, due to them being convinced that everyone around them would be better off with them dead. I don't see what's selfish about ending ones life because of feeling like a burden or being convinced that people around them would be better off without them. Sounds more selfless than anything. To me that is. And again it's pretty selfish for other people to try and keep someone alive when they are just suffering. Would be much more selfless to let them go if they're at that point. But don't get me wrong, there absolutely is help out there if you need it. And I'm not against people getting help for their issues if therapy and meds work for you and you manage to come out the other side feeling like life is worth it good for you. But for the people that are at a point where existence is nothing else than suffering and misery for those people ending ones existence might be the only option they have left. And at that point who is the selfish ones really?

Couldn't agree more. The amount of people who scolded me and said they just "didn't understand" and "how could you do this to me?" after my attempts was kinda astounding. Do people really not see the irony in this? I guess it comes down to people valuing their own comfort over your comfort.

Ye people definitely value their own comfort over others think that's just a human thing. And also think it might come from not realizing how much someone is suffering to come to the point of wanting to make an attempt. I mean I've always been of the opinion that you can't know what someone's going through unless you're going through/ or went through the exact same situation. But I really do not understand the point of shaming someone for attempting when that is in alot of cases a very valid reaction to all the suffering ones been through and is still going through. Like if someone fails an attempt the least you can do is try and comfort them instead of shaming them and making it about yourself.

I think a huge part of it also comes from years of societal pressure to condemn suicide and mental illness in general. Hopefully this outlook is something that can be reversed with time <3

Yes defo, it's hard to look at a subject from a different angle when all your life you've been taught and told that that specific thing is just bad.

The reality is that continuing to exist could never be an obligation and it doesn't matter what other people say about this. If people don't wish to deal with loss then they shouldn't do the shameful and unnecessary thing of choosing to bring life here, so if you think about it that way parents caused all of the suffering in the first place. I think that people use the whole "suicide is selfish" argument as a way to guilt trip people and make them feel bad for wanting to escape this hellish world, and pro lifers who do this disgust me. It's like people forget that we are all just destined to die anyway.

it's pretty telling when their only reason they can muster is "i'll be sad", right as you're about to leave their life / considering leaving it. they don't bother until you express active / passive suicidality, until you give up on convincing them and agree with them, continuing the cycle of misery.

I think they are appealing to your sense of morality. Doesn't it make you bad that you would do that to them? Your very loved ones? It's also a matter of not being able to properly deal with such events so they just spit out the most brainless thing they can say. Either way at that point I feel you have the right to tell them to f*** off.

Taking care of yourself is selfish. Because you take care of yourself, your soul. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Existence is pain, and avoiding pain is natural, you wouldn't touch a hot frying pan, and it's socially ok to withdraw your hand from the hot spot, but burning your soul daily and suffering, to make others feel better about themselves? What sick society. What a garbage society. Sometimes I feel like that some people must come in contact with pain, trauma etc to accept that others don't want to participate in this evil cycle.
