  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

I've read this more than twice about people who have ctb. They say suicide should only be an option for very few people (including them) and it is like pandora's box. I've watched a documentary about a girl in Belgium who decided for assisted suicide. And she said this is like opening pandora's box. Or people who pretend SS would have been their reason for suicide.
I cannot really fathom how you can be that selfish. There are people with too much pain in this world. We should decrease the stigma of suicide and talk more openly about our feelings. Assisted suicide should be available for way more people. It is ridiculous that mental illnesses often don't count as a reason for assisted suicide. This is not pandora's box. Suicide exists since thousands of years. Assisted suicide is just a death with dignity. And SS gives you a peaceful way to end it instead of jumping in front of a train.

You've got a point!
In my opinion, suicide is not 100% selfish, because some people are just in too much pain to keep on dealing with this world. What do their friends and families want? See them suffering until they're 80? That's cruel.

However, I think the "selfish" part is leaving those who really love you behind beause you could literally destroy their lives.

For instance, if I ctb, my dad won't get over it or worse... He might have a heart attack. That's why I feel kinda selfish sometimes.

I think some suicides are truly selfish, more precisely suicides committed by parents. Their children never asked to be born into this world and they will suffer life-long trauma.

Personally, I don't feel the act of suicide is selfish in itself. Wanting choice and autonomy is understandable. Similarly, not wanting to suffer is natural, not selfish.

I have tremendous empathy for those who are bereaved by suicide, but I don't think treating suicidal people unkindly or trying to restrict them in ways that can be extremely damaging (e.g. by making peaceful methods inaccessible, and trying to take down forums like this one) is a reasonable solution.

I think the "selfishness" debate is a little redundant. Whether someone is selfish or not isn't really the point when you think about it, and I can truthfully think of far worse things a person can be. I think it derails more important discussion about suicide, contributing factors and autonomy, through emotionally manipulating pro-choice and suicidal people.

More relevant than selfishness is that many individuals who take their own lives are suffering - really suffering, unbearably. If a person is in tremendous pain or despair, it's really difficult to focus on anything else, despite their best efforts. Asking them to carry on without helping to alleviate that suffering (or in situations where it is insurmountable) is not just selfish - it is downright cruel.

Also more relevant than selfishness is dignity, choice and our rights. I would argue that if everyone has a right to life, we should also have a right to death. It makes sense. None of us choose to be born, and unfortunately most of us don't get to choose how we die, either. This seems rather inhumane, to expect every person to die from old age, illness, an accident or murder, just because this is more "socially acceptable" than taking it into our own hands. A peaceful death on our own terms is far more dignified.

Not sure if suicide maximum selfish. But yeah, it depends only from others reaction and suicident can think that is even altruistic(and can be right).

From other way, I think suicide as selfish as giving birth. You can ruin others life, but may be not. It just depends on culture.

Another though - in nature you can see some suicidal animals, but they haven't even concept of selfishness. And still they are.

This is always a two-edged sword. Is it selfish to inflict emotional pain on family and friends by committing suicide, or is int in fact more selfish of them to ensure I live a life of torture just to save their feelings?

All I know is my suicide will be selfish, but if I actually cared then I wouldn't be selfish enough to do it anyway.

It is selfish to expect people to live when they are suffering with no relief and no hope of improvement. I feel like if assisted suicide was legal everywhere and suicide was seen as an acceptable option to end life then suicide wouldn't be seen as selfish. I feel like because people have to take it into their own hands such deaths are undignified and traumatic as are often witnessed by others so it is seen as selfish.

THIS!!! I have looked so much into assisted suicide here in Europe. It's so frustrating. It might sound bad but I wish I could have a terminal illness so I could just go. If I could take the pain and suffering from somebody else I would jump right in.

I think that most people believe in the right to self-determination with the exception perhaps of very vicious criminals. If you genuinely believe in the right of self-determination, what rational argument could you possibly have against suicide in adults?

My family always said that suicide was selfish because it passes pain to others in the action. Which I understand but why is that worse than a person continuing to live in pain and void of mental/physicals issues with little to no help or support in the slightest. Those I've find who call it selfish won't even lift a hand to help.

I've also wished for this. Not only that, but nobody can be mad at somebody for dying of cancer.

There are much more traumatizing things one can witness their parents experiencing than death or suicide. Like dementia.

Idk. My grandmother hasn't gone batshit yet, but I don't think her decline has been that traumatic for my dad or his brothers. It is occasionally funny. Kinda dark but honestly, you learn to develop a sense of humor about it. This is her second childhood, and she laughs at her shenanigans too. She no longer had the mental capacity to ruminate and lives like a goldfish in 30 second spans. It has been sad at times but not losing-your-parent-to-suicide-at-a-young-age kind of sad.

I don't like the idea of keeping myself alive for others. It's not my job to make others happy, cater to their needs etc.. it makes me feel like it's not really my life, most of my life I've been controlled and busy people pleasing. I feel like my suicide would be the only thing I would ever have control over and I will never let anyone take that away from me. I don't care if people think it's selfish.

Same for me. I refuse to stay alive for others' sake. If I live or die it will be for my own sake.

Those that say suicide is selfish tend to be the same individuals who want absoloutely nothing to do with suicidal people - from personal experience. What does this make them?
