Before going to college, I blamed the way I was treated and the social hierarchy of my high school to simply being a product of my shitty hometown and not an accurate representation of the real world. And I couldn't wait to see what else was out there beyond it and start living.

Then I finally got to college, and it was not only the same, but worse. To start, athletes were treated like gods amongst mere mortals, and were worshipped as otherworldly beings. Women would sleep with them in an instant, and straight men even said they'd do whatever these athletes asked them to do sexually. People practically kissed the ground they walked on, and they got everything they wanted from good grades to strangers treating them better than their best friends, all by doing noting. But worse than nothing, they were some of the most selfish, mean, and entitled people you'd ever meet. One even made my friend cry due to how he treated her during a group project. And many of these athletes from my school go pro, and make millions and are set for life. On top of being famous and praised on national tv for their skills, they are also portrayed as saints becasue they visit a childrens hospital and walk around occasionally, or tweet a link to a charity to their millions of followers. And what bothers me is they have a greater positive impact and bring infinitely more happiness to others simply by existing than I could ever bring.

On a different and more widespread level was greek life. My school took it so seriously there was a forum similar to this one, but to debate rankings of fraternities/sororities and bully other students. The "top tier" fraternities and sororities had crazy, exclusive, sex and drug fueled parties major celebrities would even come to town to attend. They stood at the door and judged each individual in line to determine if they were worthy enough to be qualified to enter, turning away most due to superficial qualities. And then after college these people would get the best jobs because of the connections to other rich and successful people who were alumni of their orgs. Individuals would try to get into the highest status org, and those who didn't get selected would then attempt to join a lower ranked org with less status/benefits until they found their place in the system. The orgs were categorized as "top-tier", "upper-middle", "middle, "lower-middle" and "bottom". People would drop you out of their lives in a second if it meant climbing to another tier you weren't on. And if you didn't want to participate in this system, you had to have friends from high-school who stuck by you, or get incredibly lucky.

Now when facing the "adult world" I'm sure I can expect the same, just in a different form. These people will likely be my bosses, recruiters, and the ones who will get the promotions. I struggle to justify competing in this system any longer, and want a way out.

Did I just get unlucky where I ended up geographically and with who I encountered? Is is there really better out there? Should I keep looking for genuine, caring people? Or is this really what the world is like?

Have you written about your experiences at this college before? I vividly remember someone on SS talking about their experiences at a college like this.

For what it's worth, I honestly had no idea anything like this existed outside of movies from 1998. I'm very cynical and would have complained about it if I noticed this kind of stuff in my high school or college, but I've just never seen or heard of it in real life. I know it's hard to move on when it's been your whole life and it does sound miserable. But there really are a lot of people in the world who don't even know this type of culture exists, nevermind partake in it.

I'd definitely encourage you to find people with different interests and a different conception of friendship and community.

I also think that your experience is situational to where you are (haven't dealt with something like that much myself), while the themes of status seeking, social hierarchies, determinism and unfairness just seem like the average dealing-with-other-people experience.

There definitely are people out there that are better than that and cultures less accepting/approving of (openly) being like that, but I wouldn't know what you should or shouldn't do.

I definitely think you were offered a great opportunity to understand how society actually functions. It seems to be at least 70% who you know/blow and the rest hard work or talent. Especially now that social media has monstrously amplified our obsession with popularity and networking, you can bet your ass that being well liked and knowing the right people has more bearing on your professional life than anything else.

But even before social media, if you study recent history you can see how the most powerful people in the world are just cheaters that get together and plot, lol. Imbeciles call this conspiracy theories but its simply how humans behave.

I am now a middle-aged person and I can say that through the years of being on this shithole planet that people are basically the same everywhere you go. The human race is basically a predatory system, much like it is in the world of nature. People who are considered weak or different, or who are not one of the pack, or are not considered physically attractive and successful etc will always be left out and demonized. Human beings on the whole are stupid and selfish. In my experience it is always the truly good people on this dreadful planet that struggle to cope with this so-called society. The narcissists, psycopaths , sociopaths and sexual perverts always seem happy to here in this sick, twisted world. The arseholes of this world greatly outnumber the good people. This is one of the main reasons I am a loner and misanthrope. I have been stabbed in the back WAY too many times to count, through no fault of my own just because I am a good person and am " differnt " because I just do not fit in to the norms of society because I can see through all the crap that" normal " life encompasses and stay the hell away from it as much as I can.

It is a very depressing, unfair world we live in and more than anything I wish that I never existed. I personally cannot stand people, people can be very cruel and can make our lives much worse. I wish you the best.

I went to a Greek and party school , but it wasn't nearly as bad as what you describe. Straight guys who would give themselves sexually to athletes? Celebrities screening guests at frat parties? What school was this?

Yes a bit ago I asked people to share what their experiences in college were like. Sorry I'm not trying to be repetitive. This isn't the main reason I want to ctb, having dealt with a combo of severe mental illnesses for over a decade is. But this experience really changed my worldview and perception of others, and has me debating if it's worth continuing to try in this world.

I would have thought it only happened in moves before I experienced it firsthand. I wanted to limit personal information I shared but I'll even link the website I mentioned if you guys don't believe me.

And since I'm sharing my school (Penn State), it's with noting this is where there was a massive child sexual abuse cover up to protect the football team, and a fraternity killed a student. This is how bad the abuses of power have been here.

You don't need to share anything you don't want to. I'm sure we all fully believe you. I took a look at that site and yeah, makes me queasy to imagine having to be immersed in that culture for four years. I was just trying to encourage you to find new people, not questioning what you were saying about your college. Sorry if it came across that way.

No I got you I didn't feel pressured. But I figure it's worth sharing so people can better understand where I'm coming from. And as for personal info I always feared being doxxed or something on a site like this, but people share where they're from all the time so this isn't that different I hope.

I like your profile image by the way. It's well-composed, and the contrast between the very modern guy in the sports jersey and the shadowy Edwardian-era looking painting is striking.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it but knowing a bit about your background seems to imbue it with more meaning.

Thank you, and that's not me it's a character from one of my favorite movies but he's someone I relate to. In addition to relating to the character and loving that scene the reason I chose that specific picture is because of what it means. The director describes it in this video and it really speaks to me.

Just watched the video. Now I feel silly for not knowing it's a from a famous movie. A very well-done scene, I'll have to watch the movie sometime now.

It's a classic and one of my all time favorites I highly recommend it. It's kind of cheesy at times being from the 80s but it has so much heart and soul. Also knowing the Cameron dream theory, while just a theory, makes you watch it with a different perspective.

That reminds me of the movies If.... and Donnie Darko, two classic teen angst movies I feel attached to which also question the reality of the protagonists' experiences.

First of all, pro sports are rigged on every level. And most charities are elaborate frauds that do not improve anything for anybody.

This isn't just a song, it is telling you how the world actually works.

Even big shot Eminem gives it to you raw of how the medical industry has been infiltrated since 1913.
See how it ties into what I exposed about how these childrens hospitals and charities are all one big sick joke?

"A society that keeps cures a secret so they can continue to sell medication for huge profits is not a real society but a huge mental asylum." – Dr. Sebi

Interesting that the link you provide lists Tau Kappa Epsilon as a top fraternity. Where I went, they were so low in status they weren't even considered "really" Greek by that community. I used to see graffiti that said "If you can't go Greek, go Teke".

While I don't have any words of wisdom regarding how to live in a society where the worst people get the best of everything, I just wanted to put my two cents in, and say you're not alone in how you see the world. I see corruption everywhere and understand how - it sounds to me - you were feeling when you wrote this post. Maybe I can't empathise with your exact situation, but I know how it feels to see no point in struggling to continue when the world literally conspires against you. I think alot of us here feel that. I know it often doesn't help to be told "you're not alone" though, so I do hope I'm not making things worse...
I can also say that there are genuinely nice people out there, we exist. You sound like one. You were there for your friend when that jock made her cry, in just one instance.
I'd like to consider myself a nice person, and it can be tough to be your kind self when the whole world feels its conspiring to wipe nice people off the earth.
It's just in our particular nature to be kind, and it's almost impossible to be the back stabbing pieces of shit the world demands of us, even when we are at our lowest ebb.
I was pretty checked out last week, but even in my depth of despair I couldn't help myself but compliment a lady who passed me in the street on her fluffy pretty coat. It just fell out of me as she walked past. You could see the 😊 as she thanked me, all flustered, and we both just continued walking in our opposing directions. But I can't help being me, even in those dark waters of suicidal desire.
We exist my friend, we are out there. We are right here, for you. We reach out to each other across oceans and time zones and we find a way to find each other. If it helps, and if you can, hold onto that.
