A real cult does the following:

They establish a strict belief system which its members must obey at all times. They lure in new members based on a promise backing up said system. Once they're in, the trap snaps shut and they'll be severely punished (shaming, exile) if they disobey or even QUESTION said beliefs.

Obviously, we would never punish someone for choosing life over death. We are a group with diverse opinions and ideals. We do not have teachings saying death is the ultimate reward. We are open-minded to a wide range of outcomes.

But most of all:

!!!We tell our members to make their own decision!!!

The people of this site are free to stop using it just like any other social media site like X or Facebook. In fact that's how I view this site, just another social media platform to talk about topics that aren't otherwise discussed.

Not only that, a cornerstone of cults are messianic figures who enforce beliefs by pretending to receive orders from a god or being one themselves
I can't even think of a single person who would be remotely close to that lmao

Like with other fearmongering tactics, it's never about the truth but trying to find the comparison that'll get people to shout at something (see the recent-ish "won't somebody think of the children" laws)

This is a very beneficial viewpoint. Lots of people forget that SaSu is a forum

I grew up in a family that was bordering on cult-like, me n my mother were the cattle kept by a foreign man and his insane relatives, this website doesn't seem anything like that to me, nor similar to like, internet cults either
Beyond a similar mentality in everyone, but that's bound to happen in a community no?

Cult is a word too often used to describe some groups or organizations people do not support.
It is also used too seldom to describe others that fit the definition.

There are definitely some cultish people on this site who seem really insistent on other people killing themselves. Majority of the people on this site just want to be comforted and encourage others not to kill themselves

First off, my heart goes out to those who have experienced cult environments. I'm so sorry! ❤️ Secondly, I agree this forum is not a cult. Thirdly, I agree the loose use of the word 'cult' diminishes the severity of the word cult. This has happened to a lot of once-powerful and once-meaningful words that have affected my life and we see on the forum and IRL such as 'abuse' and 'trauma' and 'PTSD' and 'mental illness' and 'crisis'.

Part of me feels terribly upset because loose use of these words dismisses the severity of my experience. But another part of me knows that language is constantly evolving and it's just another tough pill to swallow in this life that is so bloody hard on so many levels. Yet another part of me feels grateful that even if there is the slightest similarity with other people in these words, that may mean I can connect with others even a little and belong in this world. So it's a mixed bag.

I did a Google search( I'm in Australia) of sanctioned suicide and there were some media articles from years back basically labelling SS a death cult. It's not really true from what I have seen so far. It's true, I think, that most people here are possibly anti natalist etc but I think a common theme is getting some method in place as an option. The problem if you don't have this site and other such information is you are stuck with possible violent methods.

close-minded individuals who will not see the forum (from the time I've started- at least) for what it is
so many supportive individuals here and very rarely someone tells someone else to ctb

unfortunately it is those bad apples that can poison a community- that comes with every form of community
cherry picking to justify their agenda, it's kinda sickening

they ignore the ones who haven't ctb, the ones who change their lives for the better and the ones who recover from an attempt and decide to continue living
it's really beautiful to see when people here change for the better- to continue living on
perhaps this forum was the reason they could recover

it is important for people to have access to methods
but you could also argue that giving access leads to deaths of those not ready, too

and, god forbid people have negative thoughts and need somewhere to express those thoughts with others

I just want to add context to my post, that I've seen the change in meaning since the 1980s when they started to become popular topics - cult, abuse, crisis, PTSD, trauma and mental illness.

In my Google searches over the past couple of years since I found this site, I haven't found a single favourable mention of this site. Not one. Has anyone?

Lol. Imagine telling somebody you are a member. The way things are going you could be reported to authorities and locked up. Yeah I don't think I found anything positive either.

It's always the breeders complaining....if this site didn't exist then my child would still be here. How about breeders take some personal responsibility and admit having children is a gamble, fraught with risk etc.

Basically...yes. The peaceful pill handbook in my country (Australia) was banned for sale many years ago. As if everybody contemplating purchasing it will be dead within a month of reading it.

How long were you in your cult for? Was it a large cult? How did you leave your cult? As someone who came out of a cult of 14 years myself (I haven't been able to rebuild my life since after almost 3 years which is why I'm here) id love to hear your story. My cult used fear rather than shaming and exile. (God will make something really bad happen to you, you will go to hell etc)

And also the strange (supposedly) talking to the dead shit but it wasn't common in my cult.

Dead within a month of reading it?? Lol!! I just checked Amazon in Spain, Canada, the UK and the US, and the book isn't on any of those sites!

The irony is it is legal in many countries for government-orchestrated murder, such as of unborn babies, criminals, dangerous people (and even people perceived to be dangerous as often happens with the mentally ill in crisis), as well as sick people (euthanasia).

I mean I'm not saying just because the government kills people we should be allowed to commit suicide. But I'm just saying, isn't it blatant hypocrisy when governments act so righteous in condemning suicide when they have institutionalised laws that allow them to kill people?
