• Hey Guest,

An update on the OFCOM situation: As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. OFCOM, the UK’s communications regulator, has singled out our community, demanding compliance with their Online Safety Act despite our minimal UK presence. This is a blatant overreach, and they have been sending letters pressuring us to comply with their censorship agenda.

Our platform is already blocked by many UK ISPs, yet they continue their attempts to stifle free speech. Standing up to this kind of regulatory overreach requires lots of resources to maintain our infrastructure and fight back against these unjust demands. If you value our community and want to support us during this time, we would greatly appreciate any and all donations.

Can anyone tell me if these reports about police visits for purchase of SN from DMC likely to be for real?

If it is scare mongering, it is really annoying as there are vulnerable people on this group already, with mental health issues. These kind of scare mongering reports are doing no one any good. I thought Sodim Nitrite would be legal in the UK.

ANd reports of six policemen turning up in the middle of the night is highly unlikely. THere is no reason why the police would visit in the middle of the night. If they did that in my case, for a woman who lived on her own, it is would be really bad and would not happen.

Also, I paid for the SN through DMC's Airbnb option. Would this mean it looks like I Just stayed at his apartment in Ukraine and there is no trace he sent me SN?

It might be legal in the UK, but that doesn't mean the police can't do wellness visits if they suspect someone will harm themselves.

When there were wellness checks because of IC in the past they did actually visit people at 2 am in the UK. If I had to guess, I would say they might be doing so because they are giving it to the night shift who have less to do.

I'm sorry it's upsetting you, but it could be very real. Only time will tell, we will have to see how many more people come forward, wait and see how the rest of this unfolds.

This post might be useful, talks about 2 totally legal uses for sodium nitrite

These are the two main "excuses" I keep ready for why I have SN, in case I ever need to explain it. They're both pretty believable and rooted in real, legal uses of the chemical.

Meat Curing

SN is a legit, common ingredient in curing meats—think bacon, ham, pancetta, sausages, etc. It's used to stop botulism, and it gives that nice pink/red cured color that meat loses when it's cooked or sits too long. It also gives that signature cured-meat flavor you get with bacon or hot dogs.

Usually, people don't use pure SN—they mix it with regular salt to make "curing salt" or "pink salt." A really common version is Prague Powder #1, which is about 6.25% SN and the rest is just salt. It's used for stuff that cures over a short time, like homemade sausages or bacon.

So if anyone ever asked, I'd just say:
"I'm into home charcuterie and meat curing. I use SN in tiny amounts, mixed into curing salt, to make things like pancetta or dry-cured ham. It's completely legal and standard in the food industry."

To back that up, I keep a few things around like:
  • A PDF copy of Charcuterie by Michael Ruhlman
  • A printed curing salt recipe or a Prague Powder guide

Photography

This one's more niche, but if you're into film or darkroom work it makes sense. SN has been used in bw photography, especially older or experimental methods. It's part of something called a "reducer solution," which lets you lighten areas of an overexposed photo or bring back detail in high contrast prints. Sometimes it's used in toning or altering image tone too.
While most people don't use SN for photography anymore, some analogue and alternative process photographers still do, especially in historical methods like cyanotypes or Van Dyke prints.

If asked, I'd say:
"I do a bit of alt process photography as a hobby. SN is in one of the reducer formulas I've tried—it helps finetune bw prints and highlights. It's not super common anymore, but it's still a thing in historic photo chemistry."

To help explain that, it'd be useful to have:
  • A film camera
  • A download of The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes
  • A screenshot of a developer formula with SN in it

Some general things
  • Don't leave SN lying around in a sketchy bag or bottle. Label it clearly with something like "For curing salt use only" or "Photographic chemicals".
  • If someone questions it, show them a printed recipe or page that lists SN as an ingredient.
  • SN is totally legal in many countries for curing meat and hobbyist chemistry. Just say it's for food or photo hobby stuff—no need to overexplain.
  • Keep it smallscale. Nobody's going to question one bottle if it looks like it's for a hobby.
Hope this helps if you ever need to justify having it around. Both excuses are totally legit.
It is really upsetting me as I have enough to cope with. Plus I live on my own so do not open the door to anyone in the middle of the night!
Also, sounds like the UK police aren't too bright or prepared for this so they prolly don't have a testing kit. If you are worried about this then give them something that looks like the sodium nitrite for them to not go empty handed. Problem solved...
It is really upsetting me as I have enough to cope with. Plus I live on my own so do not open the door to anyone in the middle of the night!
In the letter it also mentions that there is no power of entry to a victims premises unless an immediate threat to life is believed to exist, So don't answer the door??? Or tell them to fuck off...

Sorry, I really don't understand all this. Even if they did turn up, which I doubt, can't we just say we got rid of it as we changed our minds and we don't have it any more? THere are so many places to hide it where I live, no one would have a hope of finding it, unless they wanted to take the place apart to look for SN.

Anyway, as I added to my post, the way I purchased from DMC was through his Airbnb, so doesn't that mean it looks like I just stayed at his Airbnb in Ukraine?

It's okay... So, from what I understand the substance is not illegal, meaning they can't come in by force into your home. From the letter I get that they SOMETIMES do wellness checks if they identify that you bought it online ( I think it's impossible to wellness check everyone). These wellness checks come from an increase in suicide by SN (the letter is from a family member of someone who did this). So you can tell them to fuck off, not answer the door, or straight lie to them like you said. You can tell them you do not know what they are talking about, or that you no longer have this. Or that you have alternative uses for it like curing meat or photography...

It's not serious or illegal if they come, they can't do anything to you<3

I agree with you. There are a lot of things you can do to keep your SN safe and diffuse the situation. It's best to prepare for a visit regardless of what really happens. If you can find a way to get a receipt from a hazardous materials disposal company for the SN, even better.

I was thinking I would just say I threw it away as I spoke to the Samaritans and they advised me to get rid of it. What can they do? (I wouldn't just throw it away obviously but they couldn't lock me up for being supposedly being stupid!)

I also just looked it up and you can dispose of Sodium Nitrite by mixing it well with bleach, which will make it Sodium Nitrate which is then safe to flush it down the toilet. If anyone is confronted with this situation, this might be an option to say this. Wouldn't risk actually doing this but it is something to tell the police, if they do come.

Yeah, they can't do much UNLESS someone does tell them you are suicidal... Or maybe have a history of mental health issues that would make them believe you buying SN could lead to you using it to suicide... But that is a stretch... Just tell them to fuck right off...

Makes sense, but if you had proof somehow it would be even better. Taking a proactive approach to the situation could help mitigate any problems down the road.

DMC wasn't "closed down". The "host" of the website ceased hosting the DMC online store. It had nothing to do with law enforcement shutting DMC down or seizing records. DMC is up and running again with a new hosting service.

This is the problem. I am known by the mental health services and my doctor as having mental health issues/suicidal ideation. But, again as I said, I can just say I disposed of it as I rang the Samaritans. Not great to lie to the police but in this case it is justifiable. It annoys me it is any of their business anyway. If someone is determined to kill themselves, what business is it of the polices? So annoying they feel they have a right to step in and prevent it.

From what I've seen DMC is shut down now. I went to the website & saw for myself.
I'm not sure if the wellness check stories are true but the police have the right to knock on your door & ask if you're OK based on the purchase of "poisons". Interpol is now reporting these purchases to the appropriate authorities. They do not have the authority to enter without your permission & SN is not illegal. The only way they can enter is after declaring an emergency situation.🤗🌹💔

I see... You would have to look into it further... All it says in the letter is that an offense has to be established or suspected. That could mean a lot of things... Either way, at most, they would seize the SN (might be a good idea to have another SN looking salt to give to them, even if they test it you could tell them that is what you got in the mail). I wouldn't worry too much about it, especially if you live alone...

Take precautions and cross the bridge if you must, but nothing will happen to you!

I would say being hospitalized for suicidal ideation could be a problem. I'm sorry you're struggling with anxiety and mental illness, most of us are. I'm just suggesting that a proactive approach could prepare you for the future regardless of what happens and might help settle your anxiety some. I'm not suggesting that you should dispose of your SN, just come up with a clever way to keep it and pacify the authorities at the same time.

I BElIEVE DMC was ukranian, the most corrupt country in the EU, and taking the war into account, I doubt that there is any record sharing or communication about SN... That's just me though...

Agreed, its a confusing situation but if the internet host terminated the site then its as good as shut down, at least for now.
I've seen two stories of people visited by police recently & both stories were written by new members. One of the two stories doesn't sound legit at all, the other is questionable.
My advice would be to sit tight, take a breath & wait for this to play out. 🤗🌹💔

wtf this is similar to IC SN police checks a few years ago but those became world wide . .

Has Anyone in the U.S. reported a police check for DMC SN ?

i can't have any police or mental hospital threats . who the fuck would want to live in this hell another minute? this is utter hell.

for one thing these pos gov fucks treat you like a criminal for wanting to escape extreme torture and could take away my escape

another #3 just reported police checks in the UK from DMC

I'm thinking this is only affecting people who paid through the AirBnb method. Around the same time DMC closed, AirBnb started refunding/banning accounts for purchasing from DMC. Here's a link to a post about someone getting banned from AirBnB. If that's the case, it's no wonder only a select few of British users are getting police visits; from what I've read, this was one of the trickier ways to have purchased SN.
i ordered it through normal debit card, to my home address.
