Hey everyone,

I've been using alcohol regularly for quite a while and my doctor recommended I switch to smoking. Does anyone have any experience or feedback on this transition?

I don't really have any major insight but anecdotally I've seen people who have struggled with things like alcoholism and hard drugs stick to coffee and cigarettes and seem to function fine without relapsing, if you're not already into cigarettes then I don't know if I'd recommend starting though, I love cigarettes but its hellishly expensive where I live and fucks ur lung capacity if u enjoy running or swimming or anything like that.

switching from a addiction to addiction Maybe doesnt sound that amazing but nicotine is highly addictive and u will feel easier dropping alcohol. Later on u will probably want to drop the ciggaretes too and replace it with running or generally working out. Obviously if u are persistent enough to drop alcohol u can try jumping to working out from the get go

What about vaping instead of regular cigarettes?

I have given up both drinking and smoking. I wouldn't pick up smoking if you don't already. It's expensive, it stinks, it makes it hard to breathe. Plus, I don't think it'll keep you from drinking, and then you will just have two addictions

I already smoke cigarettes, but my doctor specifically recommended the other kind of smoking, sorry I should have made that clearer in my initial post.

Very interesting, I just came across this yesterday. I present the pro golfer John Daly. Switched from a severe alcohol addiction to food. But was very high functioning and competitive regardless of which his vice was.

Sorry everyone, I meant my doctor recommended to stop drinking alcohol and replace it with weed smoking.

That's a weird advice coming from a doctor. Smoking weed can lead to addiction, difficulties to manage your daily life, accidents when you're high etc.
I don't think it's the best thing, it should be recreational imo.

I find that drinking often leads me to smoke more, lol.

I never heard of a doctor trying to solve alcohol addiction with cigarettes honestly, it sounds quite stupid, I get the concept but wouldn't it be better to use stuff like nicotine patches or gums? Plus I think they affect different receptors, cigs are a stimulant while alchol is a depressant. I'm ignorant in this regard but it doesn't sound very sensible.

Ah, I see that's a form of harm reduction potentially. Do you think you would switch addictions? Or would you just add one? I would probably just end up with two. Would you be up for cutting back the drinking without replacing it with another substance? It ain't easy, but it's good

it is not entirely clear from the text whether you are addicted or whether you are using the drugs for other reasons
