do you think illegal or legal drugs can seriously affect mentality? Like a bad trip?

warning: I'm not encouraging and I don't want to encourage anyone to use them, I'm just asking a question that seems very obvious, but I would like to know other opinions.

and depending on the answer, do you know anyone who has recovered?

I think it depends on what drug, what amount and how stable the person is prior.

I have taken illegal substances in large amounts. Each has their own affect on me both during and after.

I have also dated someone addicted to cannabis and when he couldn't get it he was verbally and physically abusive

I have also dated a frequent ketamine user and for days after he took he he became emotionally unattached very vacant and no sex drive

does it make sense, but do you think someone with good stability can have a bad trip, hallucinations and the like? I understand that everyone has a different experience.

Yes I have seen strong minded people have bad trips on acid and stuff. It's quite scary

Depends on the drugs and it's effects on your body, how your Body react, doses etc.

Personally i experienced, if someone has an addictive personality or unsolved problems there will always be some noticeable drawbacks even with cannabis.

Definitely, it's hit or miss though. I personally only go for mind-expanding drugs - psychedelics such as LSD and mushrooms. They generally don't carry the risk of dependence / addiction but there is the risk of bad trips though. Also, it is said that psychedelics can be dangerous for people with a predisposition for schizophrenia

some drugs are known to have very positive effects on people.
I would be careful with some drugs. Do your research. For example, psychedelics can trigger schizophrenia in people who have a predisposition for it.
But I would say there is also a mountain of evidence suggesting they can treat other mental disorders to great effect. mushrooms for depression and anxiety. m for ptsd.

I've watched LSD strip my friend to the bones and destroy him for a couple years, but he's recovered a lot now thankfully. Psychedelics depend on the person, I love them and I find them eye opening and able to help me cope for at least a little bit more. As mentioned they can also bring out schizophrenia if you're predisposed through family history. Traditional psychedelics aren't addictive, however you can abuse them and you might start having a few screws come loose but I personally found it pretty mild.

If you're asking because you're curious, start with a low dose. It'll be underwhelming but it's safest.

If you've dealt with a bad trip and wonder if you can recover, you really can. It's not the easiest but it's entirely possible. Consider psychological support if you're comfortable telling someone else about it.

All manner of drugs, legal and especially illegal, can trigger an existing predisposition towards mental illness.

Additionally, a particularly traumatic subjective experience while using drugs, such as a bad LSD trip, can cause depression, anxiety or PTSD in exactly the same way any kind of real-life experience does.

I'm a case of psychedelics causing schizophrenia. I wouldn't be on this website otherwise. I've wanted to kill myself everyday since this all started randomly last December. Now I have to die for everything to go away because hospitalizations haven't helped. I'm living in hell and I don't mean that figuratively. My family has had to suffer and watch me go from being a completely life-loving, self-sufficient human being, to going in and out of hospitals because my brain stopped functioning.

I'm looking for an easy way out. I can't buy a gun because of my mental health history. As much as I am sad about not having a future, I just want peace. I just want out.

I can really relate to this. I smoked cannabis for 20 years then at one point developed bipolar 1. Its absolutely excruciating and I want to end my life. I was a highly functioning person... an athlete. Now I can barely function at all.

I understand, we all want to get out of our personal hells.
I'm sorry for everything that happened to you.

Everything depends on your body. And only on it.
I heard a lot of different stories, can estimate from my observations as well.

Even if we take such a relatively harmless thing for many people called weed, for some it can be life-changing.
1) One became a walking dead. You have to repeat him everything, he can barely concentrate and turned extremely slow, without any emotions.
2) Another became less aggressive and started being more respectful to others. Before he was constantly fighting others, really enjoyed punching people. However, became slower and it takes more time for him to process information
3) Third one was the same as now, he always had problems with concentration and you had to explain him everything multiple times, but became much more simple. Well, he may always be a deep thinker, however, now he is more open.
4) Fourth developed strong anxiety after a few times of cannabis smoking causing panic attacks, full recovery is impossible - he had light anxiety, performance anxiety and insomnia prior. Everything returned to the same level as it was.
5) Fifth mixed weed and XTC, that resulted in a few weeks of paranoia and panic attacks, recovered

This was an influence. Others smoke and nothing visible happens to them.

Concerning other substances,
One was just consuming everything he could buy to get high and developed schizophrenia, his personality is destroyed now.
LSD was relentless to first time users according to stories I heard (not which observed). Up to several years of recovery. Mostly because they could not get out of the trip.

So that's very individual. A Russian roulette.

depending on the drug, yes. say meth, for example...when a person takes meth, surges of the neurotransmitter dopamine flood the reward circuit in the brain which regulates a person's sense of reward and pleasure. because of this, meth essentially teaches an individual's brain to repeat taking the drug as a means of re-creating this effect. the more a person feels this way, the more intense the cravings are. as cravings become more frequent, a person's abuse can accelerate. taking meth, especially in high doses and/or for extended periods of time can lead to brain damage, cognitive problems, and mental health problems, some of which could be lasting.
