I presume he comes to deny this position by the end of the book? I think there's no unveiled way of seeing tbh. Seeing is synonymous with seeing through a veil.

I have no idea to be honest. I've been meaning to read the book for a while but I've been too nervous to. This analogy stuck with me though because it explained so succinctly how hard it is to "leave" depression, like how when you realise something is a lie it's impossible to go back to believing what you used to. Or how it's really hard to go back to your old self once you've changed (like imagine acting as you did when you were a teenager now that you're an adult). I agree with your way of thinking because no way of seeing is unbiased but I think the analogy is more effective in letting others understand what depression is like if you frame it as the bare truth that we are living (regardless of whether or not that is true in reality).

Like you mentioned, it's said to be politically motivated, which is a huge shame. In the end, it's the reader who is the most important and their work will stand the test of time.
