I bought SN like two months ago, haven't opened yet. how long does it last? it go bad if I open it?

also how can I check its purity? the website from which I bought it didn't specify any grade, nor food or lab just some characteristics.

planning on doing it next week so i started to check everything.

unopened sn stays good for at least a few years I think otherwise you can do an aquarium test to check

If the website didn't list any specifics like Assay (Purity) or whether its food or lab grade, that's rather strange as it would do so for most lab suppliers who know labs that buy such chemicals will want to know this sort of thing.

it only has density and molar mass

You...may have gotten fleeced. Or it's consumer SN like curing salt that's 5% SN and 95% table salt. Assay and commercial grading are fairly standard things to advertise in commercial chemicals.

You'd have to do some complicated titration with potassium permaganate to check the purity of SN. As I recall, aquarium tests generally only test if a certain threshold is detectable.

i dont think i've been bamboozled tbh. at least here in my country (I can only say that it is in South America) you can buy it quite easily, but as far as characteristics/specifications on it there were none, but I do think is food grade.

can you tell me more about that titration with potassium permaganate?

It's still odd that commercial SN would fail to mention purity, since that's a really important factor that would determine someone using one vendor over another. Molar mass and density is info you could get off of Wikipedia and totally meaningless to put in a commercial product.

The titration method would determine purity by telling you how many grams of SN is in 100 ml of SN solution. You'd dissolve SN in a flask, acidify potassium permanganate with sulphuric acid and then titrate the potassium manganate against the SN solution to see how much nitrite is reacting within a 100 ml sample to determine purity.

Honestly, you're better off just buying more SN from a vendor that actually lists the purity if you're not sure.

Agreed, it might be curing salt.

Couldn't agree more, it's just better to buy from a Vendor that actually lists Assay and what grade it is.

kinda hard, I've been looking for months here but haven't found any vendor who lists purity/assay. at least the place I bought from sells just chemical products, so I strongly think is food grade. that would be enough?

If you haven't opened it yet and its currently being stored in an airtight container in a cabinet then its still good. After you open it, immediately put it back in the container to prevent it from "going bad". As for the testing, you can use the aquarium test or the blood test. Both of which are mentioned in the SN bible. Both are easy to do so you can do both. In addition, the aquarium test strips are available on amazon.
