  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

Internationally, there's a strong relationship between poverty and suicide, with about 75% of suicides being documented in poor countries despite cultural taboos against reporting suicides (Bantjes J, et al., Poverty and suicide research in low- and middle-income countries: systematic mapping of literature published in English and a proposed research agenda. Glob Ment Health (Camb), 2016 Dec 13;3). But even in wealthy countries like the US, "[p]overty rates were strongly associated with suicide rates for both genders and all age groups" (Kerr, W. C. et al., American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 2017, 52;4, 469-475).

If you feel comfortable sharing, does financial struggle play any role in your thinking about suicide?

For me, they have as much a role as other reasons I have. I cant stand grinding each day just to barely stay alive, makes me feel even more worthless and insignificant than i already feel.

Ditto for me. It is insult to injury to have to demean yourself just to be able to afford food and rent. I lack the skills and experience to have a decent career/lifestyle/etc. So on top of being depressed, I have to worry about a broken body and also bills to pay.

If this isn't the definition of hell, I don't know what is.

Last year I was homeless. I stared down the barrel of my shotgun with *almost* enough pressure on the trigger. Life at that point had fallen completely apart for me. Fast forward to today and I have a small apt that I struggle to not to be evicted from. I was starting to get my feet under me. Friday I found out I'm being extorted for money backed up with the threat of force to make me pay what I can't afford. So...here I am back on SS. My method(s) are still available, tucked away in a cabinet.

This sounds ominous. Strange how "precious life" is something authorities and other official bodies are willing to dispose of when they find you owe them money. Also, isn't it strange how few recourses you have against me, another private citizen, for defrauding you of what you need to survive--because, the authorities argue, "it's just money," but the same authorities can imprison you if you can't afford to pay them your debt? Two radically different views of debt based on the one owed money. Hope a solution materializes for you very soon.

This is so true and what I'm facing also. I'm 56 and disabled so it would be even worse for me.

The fact everything costs money for survival or stimulation does play a role. I've always struggled with accepting that my whole purpose in life is to survive, and die for those troubles anyway. It feels like I'm trapped on a bus that is driving it's way slowly off a cliff, whilst everyone on the bus is trying to convince me, that everything will be fine if I take up hobbies & exercise.

Of course it does, although physical and mental illness play a MUCH larger role in me being down than lacking finances/being a wageslave.

My main reason for being suicidal; I despise capitalism and struggling to make ends meet, which I have had to do since I was a child. My family was extremely poor, and we relied almost solely on government assistance. In 2018, I became homeless after my mom lost her job and it was a nightmare.

Might be confirmation bias, but really, those who say money doesn't matter, more likely than not have (in my opinion) never been in a really bad situation financially. I have debt and have been homeless for some time myself, and once my parents pass, I'll likely be homeless again as I am basically a NEET now. Massive student loan debt as well. Obviously people who are better off financially still have mega issues, but living life on the margins/fringes of society and barely surviving is an awful way to exist. No clue what's gonna happen next with soaring inflation, rising prices, energy costs going up, supply chain shortages, rents at insane levels. All I know is I'm fucked, regardless, and even with the mental illness and trauma I have, financial struggles now and particularly the future are the biggest reason I want to CTB for sure.

It actually pisses me off. Even on here some people pretending money doesn't matter. Well it doesn't matter if you always had it. Living in abject poverty is just the final nail on the coffin.

I know that people with money have their own problems but at least money affords them breathing space. When you are living on the fringes of society one mistake you are out on the streets. Which is hard enough to deal with if you are a normal person but if you are chronically depressed and suicidal it is basically game over. No coming back from that.
