This argument has been bugging for a while, thinking of how to refute it. Well something just clicked and it is very simple.

Well sure we're healthier and better fed than ever, and there's more of us. But you need your livestock healthy and well fed to make them profitable. Actual cows are statistically healthier and starve less than 50 years ago, and there's way more of them. But they need to be in order to be useful.. In fact they are healthier and there's way more of them than whatever animal they were domesticated from thousands of years ago. I doubt they are very happy though.

It was so simple, the answer has been staring me in the face. I can't believe I keep finding things that most people are so brainwashed about that even I accepted the bullshit as the truth.

Yeah we're less likely to die of horrible disease. So fucking what? There's much more to happiness than health and food. Maybe a little bit of space to live and some freedom would be good. Most are living technically in slavery while most of this bullshit we do is unnecessary. Once food became a non issue, people started working on entertainment, so that after we'd have something to do after our basic necessities were taken care of, and now we need better and shinier things in order to keep our minds away from the shitty job that creates them. Vast majority of jobs could be eliminated and it wouldn't affect our food or health. Funny how people focus on those 2 things and conveniently ignore how we have less and less freedom and space. We need to be on the 'grind' to get a bigger living space that is suitable for a sentient being. All the while we have less time for physical exercise and are cooped up in a closed space most of our waking hours. We have no time or energy left to live healthily (not to mention social needs) but it's fine because you can just go to a doctor and he'll keep your trash body working with medicine and your tortured brain with drugs.

But society is so far removed from these ideas it's insane.

I feel completely isolated and even my close friends are still closer to the rest of the people than to me.

I'm writing this on a suicide forum because there's literally no other place I could think of that would take it seriously.

Anyway the conclusion is that humans are fucking horrible, the people who hold us in slavery and all the idiots who let it. I hate you all. And I hate me.

What a displeasure to have existed in this form among these animals. Anyway I have drugs for now and I can still squeeze some nice chemicals into this watery sponge. How much longer though?

I agree with you. This argument or "we live in best times" is full of shortsightedness. Your comparison with cows is very good, i will use it in the next discussion I have about that subject. Thank you for writing your thoughts down, in enjoyed reading them.

Yes, some people may say this, but we also still lack the right to die. We deserve the option of a peaceful exit on our own terms. Existence really is a terrible thing from my point of view, I mean we were all perfectly fine not existing until we were forced into this world.

This argument has been bugging for a while, thinking of how to refute it.

The counterargument that comes first to my mind is that it's a broad generalization. It may be true overall for the human population on average, but it says absolutely nothing about individual circumstances. That humans overall are enjoying a higher quality of life says nothing about the suffering of one person.

Further, quality of life often measures, directly or indirectly, wealth and material possessions, neither of which are solutions for the depression, trauma, and other mental health issues that lead people to suicide past the baseline required for stable housing, food, and minimal leisure. As a matter of fact, the world's most developed nations also struggle with some of the worst baseline rates of depression and suicide.

The cow analogy is a very good one. Of course, it's not just about longer lifespans; in terms of comforts, things like air conditioning were unthinkable even to kings and queens just a century ago. But this too has a finite value in a world where loneliness seems to increase in proportion to the growing human population.

The biggest difference is that modern people actually choose slavery to the system and cruelty towards less fortunate beings on the planet. It doesn't have to be this way. Yet very few seek any sort of alternative or are even open to criticising root causes of society's dysfunction. Because that would amount to 'negativity'.

I can't help but notice that often the most thoughtful people will CTB while the least thoughtful will reproduce like rabbits. No doubt the lack of community in modern times will push even decent people to want a 'nuclear family' so there is some sense of belonging or affection, at least within the walls of their own homes. This only divides and distracts the human family further. It is truly an unfortunate state of affairs and sometimes I think I might have to just leave them to it.

It's bullshit. Everything is amplified. Cost of houses are out of many people's price ranges. Renting is ridiculously expensive. Wages haven't gone up for shitty jobs for over a decade. Food prices high. Gas high. So many unemployed people and recent college graduates. Degree mills. Expensive healthcare. Stupid 2 year certs and 1 year certs required to only make 15 hr. Shit is absolutely ridiculous and only the safe, gainfully employed people can make it without utter stress and a doomed reality.

The internet is great for some things....but the exposure to terror and pain affects people.

It's only worse. Everything.

The worst of all is that apparently no system is going to satisfy the needs of the people in a lasting way, if you subsidize the services your country will go bankrupt, if you do not, the large-scale economic crisis will affect the purchasing power of each person causing that it is increasingly impossible to access such services.

We have not witnessed a great war for a long time but even so things are irretrievably failing, it seems that human beings are not capable of living together in peace

In US atleast life expectancy has gone into reverse. That's one metric I think is pretty indicative of atleast where things are at if not where they are going.

what will happen to other countries when US imperial largesse is withdrawn? We've seen the results in Afghanistan

I was just thinking about that today. For all of our modern marvels the right to choose when we wish to die is still shunned, frowned upon and ostracized. Goes to show that this civilization is still behind on the times despite being far in the future.

Well yes but dying would inconvenience them and reduce short term profit. So does a decreasing birth rate. Everyone else needs to hold people here in this world to profit from their contribution to society.
