  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

In light of the new policy about methods and the NYT article, I was wondering how many SS members are okay with publicly speaking out regarding how important these forums are for people. I personally have no shame and would love to be able to educate people about the importance of these forums. It's frustrating that the first thing that appears when you go to read the NYT article is a pop up leading to a suicide hotline number. That is not the answer and often times it just leads the caller to feeling more empty, lonely and misunderstood. I wish a journalist would actually take the time to find out why people have to come to a site like this in the first place, instead of sensationalizing it.

Richard Burgon MP is the MP of the lady who lost her son Joe, sorry I can't remember her name at the moment. He has been vocal about it because she has fed him her bullshit. But Richard is an honourable, principled and thoroughly decent person who I'm certain would empathise with anyone from here who reached out to him. It has crossed my mind to contact him and present him with the point of view of forum users. But honestly I'm afraid of outing myself as being at risk, when actually I'm not at risk at all, I just have a lot of ideation.
Perhaps somebody who is willing and articulate could reach out to Richard?

Since you mentioned that you were not at risk, could you tell me why you consider yourself that way? I'm just curious.

I have lots of ideation and have for many years. But I have never tried to harm myself or anyone else. I consider myself suicidal because of the pain I feel daily, emotional pain and trauma. But I am nowhere near ready to actively ctb. I have responsibilities now but I feel I've always been on the path to suicide, and it might be 5, 10 years away yet, but I feel it will come. That's my honest answer. I could never explain that to any professional because they freak out, so it's all kept inside.

Gotcha and thank you for sharing that. I've definitely opened up a lot more with the public with my thoughts and views on the topic. It's so taboo and it shouldn't be. People hear the word "suicide" and they immediately just want to shut it down. What needs to be done is to open a dialogue and educate people on the topic and all the things that lead to it such as mental illness, invisible physical ailments, etc.
