I recently went on Prozac, and I don't think it's helped at all. I've been on it for about a month and a half, and I still don't feel ok. I just feel like giving up, because who would care? It was supposed to help, and I've already tried so much. I think if this feeling goes on for much longer, I will definitely give up entirely. Has anybody experienced this with Prozac? I just want help and I can't get it irl so

Prozac is like the first med they give to depressed people, so I assume you haven't tried the more powerful ones like Cymbala and Effexor.
Some meds works for some people, and don't work for others. You should probably try another SSRI first like Zoloft. If that doesn't work, they'll maybe augment it with an antipsychotic.

You got a lot of stuff to try before giving up.

Also: there is a lot of people here against antidepressants. The reason is obvious, if they worked for us, we wouldn't be here. However meds are actually helping a lot of people live normal lives. We're just not the lucky ones
It would be nice if you also told us more about yourself

not everyone feels better after their first medication. It's not uncommon for a patient to try 3 or 4 different SSRI/SNRI. Also, there are alternative methods such as Ketamine, Shrooms, TMS, ECT etc.

The vast majority of people don't get any good effect from it within the first months and usually experience increased anxiety, anhedonia and dysphoria as the most common side effects, so it's normal that you feel this way.

this type of medication is slow and requires a lot of commitment to produce good results. but many people don't experience them at all and that's why psychiatrist change the dose or the medication itself over and over. they have a surprisingly low success rate that can be mimicked with a placebo.

I'm not trying to dissuade you from pursuing therapy with psychiatric medication, I know that they help some people greatly, but as a disclaimer, I'm extremely against this kind of medication for many reasons, including more than 4 years on them that left me with permanent side effects and horrible withdrawals.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, you are at the point where you should start seeing some improvement, so keep going a bit further into the treatment, but you should also listen to your body and try alternatives from other medications not in the SSRI category if it doesn't work for you.

So often it takes several dosage adjustments for it to become effective. Also, it's more common for it to be combined with other meds. Antidepressants in general require a lot of tweaking and experimentation. You also have to be very consistent. There are tons out there, so maybe prozac isn't effective for you but another might be.

I've been on ever dose of prozac, mixed with all sorts of things. Abilify, wellbutrin, buspar, gabapentin, lithium, etc. Right now I'm trying a low dose combo of prozac and zoloft and lithium, which is uncommon but my psychiatrist said it's very effective for some people.

Be sure to accurately report if things work or not, and also how they make you feel so your doctor for can help you better.

In all honesty I think all these meds affect everyone differently. I'm on Prozac 60mg and I think it really helps my anxiety and OCD (depression symptoms maybe not so much) but if it helps any of your symptoms then I would say don't write it off just yet. Or if it doesn't then talk to your GP about switching to another.

Prozac is one of the original SSRIs developed for depression, it did not work for me and I suffered from side effects associated with this med at a very low dose.

However, as many have said here, this med may help some and not others.

There have been many SSRIs/SNRIs developed since Prozac.

Before giving up (which may actually be a side-effect of Prozac), please tell your doctor that Prozac is not working for you and ask/tell him/her that you would like to try a different medication.

You might just find one that helps you.

And even though I am some anonymous poster on the internet, I care <3

I think prozac increased my anxiety. I've been off of it since Wednesday and got put on lexapro and buspirone, no improvement though...

When I first went on Prozac it took me around six weeks to feel a benefit. After that, I have to admit, it was a revelation. I couldn't believe how easy everything got. No more depression or OCD, nothing floored me I just kept going. I realised what it was like to feel good about things.
But that lasted around nine months and then gradually stopped working.
Pooped out.
Another 20 years of on and off such drugs to no effect. Well, no good effect, just the side effects and long term issues associated with SSRIs.
I believe that whilst they may help in the short term, that in the long term they can cause metabolic issues and a worsening of depression by causing the body to lower seretonin levels in response to having more of it knocking around at the synapses.

I had a very bad experience with Prozac - I passed out on my desk at work and it left me with a strange tic that caused my head to twist to the left for about 6 months after my final dose.

Oh I'd also not that a higher dose of Prozac dangerously disassociated me to the point where I felt nothing was real. I contemplated ramming cars than cut me up, because why not? I stopped cold because I knew this was dangerous.

Prozac is supposedly one of the few antidepressants (along with Zoloft and Wellbutrin) that can indirectly influence dopamine in the brain and (although rare) can put one at risk for developing Tardive Dyskinesia. I'd personally steer clear of it in favor of an SSRI that solely targets serotonin. It might be less effective but I think that it outweighs the risk of potentially becoming afflicted with TD.

I am trying to go off Zoloft for that very reason.
