  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

Not like musicians who's suicides made them even more famous for example, but just random, normal people who only became known because of their suicides. Off the top of my head, I can only think of three. Evelyn McHale, Christine Chubbuck, and Rina Palenkova.

For those who don't know, Evelyn McHale was famous for a photograph a man took of her dead body and was dubbed something along the lines of "The Most Beautiful Suicide." It's really upsetting since she wanted to be cremated as she put in her note, "I don't want anyone in or out of my family to see any part of me."

Christine Chubbuckn was known for being the first person to commit suicide on live television. She had never dated anyone and was approaching her 30th birthday, which led to previous attempts with overdosing. Close to her suicide, she was told she would be unable to conceive children. Her script included a passage to be read after her suicide: "TV 40 news personality Christine Chubbuck shot herself in a live broadcast this morning on a Channel 40 talk program. She was rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where she remains in critical condition."

Rina Palenkova was a more recent case in 2015. She was a 16 year old girl who's suicide apparently inspired other teenagers. I've seen fanart of her online, as well as a subreddit, which is certainly unusual. Honestly, Im not too familiar with it and her "fancircles."

Is there anyone else like this? This topic is kinda interesting to me, since often times, a lot of "famous suicides" were already at least somewhat known prior to their suicides.

I can think of one and that's a Roro-Chan, who was a 14 year old Japanese live streamer who streamed herself jumping from a building. I don't think she was famous before that stream, but certainly after there was a music video inspired by her and quite a bit of online attention. That is the only one I can think of though.

I was about to mention this case, yeah. The attention skyrocketed.

Almost all people who have self-immolated as protest I guess, I don't know of any that were famous before their suicide, probably because the point of the act is to make one's message reach a lot of people as a nobody

The people who live streamed their suicides, Ronnie McNutt is probably the most famous one.

I don't know what level of famous we are talking about but I remember Sol Leonina Pais, she was severely depressed and had this obsession with the Columbine High School massacre from back in the 90's, there was even a FBI man hunt because people feared she would shoot the school again, but she only wanted to kill herself, really sad, in a way she was the last victim of that massacre.

Ah, there was also Thích Quảng Đức, a buddhist monk who self immolated as protest, he didn't make a sound, not even a movement, I remember him because he appeared on the cover of a rock band named rage against the machine (yes, i'm old)

Alfonsina Storni was an Argentinian poet, she died by drowning, the story is kind of romantic, the story says that she walked towards the sea at night, there is a very sad song in Spanish called "Alfonsina y el mar" (Alfonsina and the sea) that tells the tale, she was recognized as a poet but her suicide is what made her kind of famous, at least back in her day.

I'm sure there are more, will post if something else comes to mind

Yes, also there was Jeremy Wade Dell, died in his school, that one was as sad as it was brutal, he was a 15 year old boy, talented in painting, his last words were "Miss, I got what I really went for" and shot himself in front of the class, Pear Jam made a song about the incident called "Jeremy"

Why do I know these things?

usually in school at least once you'll have some kind of assembly or group talk with the school guidance counselor about online safety (I think it was the 2010s) and she would be brought up and her video on YouTube was popular too

she was sextorted, harassed, bullied, and groomed by a bunch of adults/creeps online (who were known for doing this to multiple young girls/teenagers) and committed suicide by drinking bleach

the YouTube channel Dreading True Crime and Criminal Psychology goes more into depth and give more detail about what happened

Budd Dwyer
if you've been on the internet long enough you've probably seen a video or archived video of this guy shooting himself in the mouth or either it was the head (or read or heard about it online) on television during some kind of conference

Christine Chubbuck (the one in the first post)

Her mother chose not to tell WXLT management about her daughter's suicidal tendencies because she feared Chubbuck would be fired.

i find this interesting. Can't tell anybody but also can't die peacefully. Not a fan of commiting suicide on live tv, but I can understand it in form of a protest (if we are so terrible then just let us die), not saying this was the case, I don't know her intentions.

I wonder if OD was easier back then, she tried before.
