It's a saying that i heard while on vacation - very popular at funerals

Why is it popular? It's such a dumb saying.

Chester Bennington and Robin Williams were known for being famously good, yet they weren't biologically young; not even speaking on the countless others. I'm not a fan on such a saying.

I mean, the saying wouldn't make much sense under that assumption. What does life being a prison have to do with the idea that only the good die young? It doesn't make any sense.
Not necessarily true, but I have definitely heard of the saying. Also, I think it's the name of a Billy Joel song.

Youth is associated with innocence. Innocence is associated with good -- or at least, "not bad." There are also thoughts along the lines of, "They had their whole life ahead of them," and, "Don't speak ill of the dead."
Younger people have had less opportunities to do bad things or to prove themselves "bad" (if we want to run with such labels).
The longer we live, the more we compromise our virtues. The younger we die, the more those virtues have remained intact.
This, as far as looking at the meaning behind the saying. (I wouldn't speak it, myself.)

You mean the amazing singer Billy Joel, most well-known for his amazing songs with lyrics like
My Mum died relatively young at 40 and by all accounts I've heard, she was very good. I don't think that's just people being polite/ respectful either. I think she genuinely was a lovely person.
Overall though, I doubt it's true. I'm sure both 'good' and 'bad' die young and old. Really truthfully though, I think most people are a mixture of good and bad. Maybe only a few stand out as exceptionally good and exceptionally bad.
I was curious though, so looked on other platforms. People said stuff like- it's because the 'good' are more self sacrificing. The 'bad' will exploit everyone around them to live longer. Maybe the more empathetic out there let life's stresses get to them more.
Also that you can be older but still young or- innocent in your mind. So- 'good' and young in terms of purity of mind- no matter their age. Obviously- these are value judgements not everyone will hold. Some people might call purity naivity or immaturity and not see it as a particularly good quality to have.
There's something appealing to me about the idea though. Like in the song: 'Vincent' (Van Gogh- below): It's my cynical view of the world coming through but I think some people are too good for it in a way and they suffer and get taken advantage of as a result. I've known other people's kindness just be abused. Maybe they are better off out of it!
