You could say that humans are cheating this game in a way. Human life span gets artificially prolonged by modern healthcare and complicated surgical procedures on daily basis. Without it, natural selection would get the vast majority of todays population, they are simply not meant to survive the real thing.
This modern life is so out of touch with nature. It's supposed to be simple and quite fast. Hunt food, multiply mindlessly, get eaten by stronger food, die due to environmental causes... Fast cycles. It's not meant to be about dwelling depressed in office cubicle and having time to even contemplate existencialism. We are no longer surviving the existence we were meant to be surviving, but this entire new synthetic system we put ourselfs into. No wonder so many of us are turning into madness.
Without all the surgeries my body has undertaken it would be dead for atleast 10 years now. Someone removed entire part of it's digestive system to enforce this machines survival. It's natural structure and genes were not predispositioned to get any far in this pointless survival competition. I'm basically outliving my given time on this earth by nature.
Maybe societies refusal of death and it's stubborn mindset of quantity over quality is the problem. Labeling death as something undesirable, forcing the dying and the ones who don't want to keep going is an issue for many reasons.
