Method Old Antidepressants and Suicide

Years ago when I first was being told about my diagnosis, my doctor at that time said because of the severe depression I was having and SSRIs were not working for me, he could prescribe an older antidepressant, but I would have to come each week to pick up a week supply of it because it could be used for suicide and he was concerned I might save it up and try to overdose on it. Now that my suffering is so much worse, I am wondering what that medication could have been. So far, every medication I have looked up seems to lack the potential for a fatal overdose. Does anyone have an idea what older antidepressant he could have been talking about? Thanks.

Perhaps your doctor recommended another medication, but that's the one in the book and it's old AF! I'm prescribed this medication and I hate it because it makes me super sleepy.

it's possible that it was a tricyclic antidepressant like imipramine or amitriptyline.

I would say it's most likely a Tricyclic as others have mentioned. I'm on them too. The reason they are not used often is the high risk of heart rhythm disturbances which can contribute to anxiety.

It is probably amitriptyline, but the dosage required for a cbt is relatively high, it takes a few months to be able to obtain the necessary quantity.

Not if you combine it with benzodiazepines (and maybe another easily obtainable substance that I can't remember right now) and antiemetics (taken an hour before). I recommend reading the Peaceful pill handbook for comprehensive information on this method. Please note that this method also requires at least 24 hours of not being interrupted to ensure success.

I'm certain it's an MAOI. This has lethal reactions with far too many other substances. The medications everyone has mentioned so far would not usually have strict restrictions as you described also.

No doctor in the UK (hardly) would prescribe you an MAOI. Because fashion and the dietary issues. Even though they can really help people. Basically everyone else is correct. But good luck getting prescribed an MAOI
