As a woman, maybe I can shed some light on this subject.

I definitely prefer poisoning over more violent methods like hanging, jumping, guns, etc.
Maybe it's not a woman thing, but I don't want my corpse to be mangled or disfigured. ODing is one way to poison yourself I guess.

Much has been written on the Over Dose preferred by women. It has often been postulated that women are more likely to seek help for Mental Disorders. Thus, they are more likely to be in possession of copious amounts of "Medicine" prescribed and would naturally gravitate to use this supply in an attempt to (hopefully) peacefully depart this dimension of existence.

I am also of the conviction that the elevated serum testosterone found in men plays a vital role in prompting the men to seek "violent" methods and interpret them as "viable". A doctor I am not though so maybe I am wrong...

I agree with what "Death" has written. Also I think the film and tv industry historically has a part to play in almost "romanticising" an overdose - a forlorn lover swallowing a few tablets and lying across a four poster bed drifting into unconsciousness. When, sadly, unless the right drugs are taken, the reality is somewhat different.

Additionally, there is the element of time. With an overdose there is time to be found and "saved" so for someone uncertain, or for someone sadly afflicted with a mental health condition that leads them to seek attention by constant attempts at non fatal harm - borderline personality disorder for example has been suggested as one such illness than can create chronic desire to do this - an overdose can be perceived by them to fit the bill.

Many reasons.

One of them is the aspect of a cry for help. An overdose is the safest route to go to cry for help. Other methods are too risky. Slitting wrists is also seen as a cry for help, but some people might find it too painful. People generally cry out for help when they have no other way to communicate (or don't think they do). I did overdose as a teenager, partially as a cry for help. The reason was because I was not taken seriously when I directly asked for help and told people I was suicidal. I actually had hope back then that things could get better.

Another factor is men are more inclined to violent methods. Due to gender roles and testosterone, it only makes sense that men would be more naturally inclined to gunshots or hanging or some other violent method. The opposite is also true. Gender roles and estrogen would incline a woman to choose a less violent method. Leave a pretty corpse and/or not traumatize the people who find them.

There are plenty of people who overdose thinking it will actually work. There are plenty of people who overdose as a cry for help. And there are many people who overdose because of both. I remember some of my overdoses were genuine. I thought I would actually die. One or two was a cry for help. Some were a combination, I realized I would either die or get help, and I was okay with both outcomes.

That was back when I was young and dumb. I haven't done anything for several years.

You're right it might be a vanity thing lol! We don't like gore, blood, pain, disfigurement. So we choose methods that are less likely to work. I try to imagine shooting myself in the head, and I envision how it would feel, and the scene. Do men graphically envision what it will be like if you shoot your self in the head?

I agree gender roles has a lot to play in this. I would like to note this is all speculation on my part, stemming from nothing more than being chronically suicidal.

A woman might be tempted to suicide and pick up a bottle of pills and realize how easy it would be to swallow them down and go to sleep forever (wishful thinking).

A man might think the same thing, but hesitate at the thought of being seen as an attention seeking pussy if his attempt fails. He may feel inclined to do a more "manly" method. Then, while attempting to pull the trigger, may use hateful self-talk like, "a real man would pull the trigger," "you're such a wimp," "are you really too weak and pathetic to do this?" Etc.

While a woman may have the same thought process and self-talk, her lack of pulling the trigger won't be tied up into her "womanliness" and identity the same as a man may take a hit to his perceived "manliness" and identity.

As justaboutdone pointed out, there is the romanticized image of a lover scorned, fading away into the afterlife. This is appealing to women. For a man, such an image may come off as a feminine attempt and thus a shameful failure if it doesn't work.

On the flip side, a violent death such as a gunshot wound to the head, is perceived as masculine. It's a loud, angry statement that demands to be seen and heard. It's a brash act that requires a certain amount of bravery. It leaves behind the image of a man determined.

tldr; gender roles leave women inclined to more "meek" methods that leave a pretty corpse, while men are attracted to methods that won't, subjectively, strip them of their masculinity. Society's roles and expectations are so ingrained in us, it influences our suicide methods! Yay.

In every other walk of life, it seems like the woman is more manly these days.

Another reason I've lived too long and just need to die. Women have deeper voices and bigger arms than I do. Who knows what else? Most of them could break me in half. Gone are the days of a soft, quiet feminine voice and presence. Can't find that unless you find it on youtube somewhere. Even that's not easy.

I've self-mutilated as a way to bring me back to reality, especially when I've had a panic attack or the anxiety has spiralled up to a stratospheric horror. Always in solitude. Too ashamed that people found out. Some people I know are too prejudiced and have prefered to save myself the drama. I used to think that slitting my wrists to death in the bathtub was a good idea (perhaps influenced by movies, as JustAboutDone said. Last one I saw was On Body and Soul). Have also thought that drinking as much vodka as possible in a short period of time would kill me. Maybe because I'm a woman, I wouldn't know for sure. In the end, I would fantasise about those cliches perhaps because I didn't want to die for real. Never actually researched about proper methods, aside from googling stuff like 'best way to kill yourself' and so on. Not like now tbh.

Are you saying that you're partially suicidal because women are no longer expected to be submissive all the time? I think the shift you're noticing has more to do with the change in expectations for women rather than the women themselves.

I tried drinking vodka straight (with benzo) as much as possible within an hr or so..several times but sadly, I'm still here. I'm a woman.

Seems like binge drinking doesn't work for me.

I've done that but with whiskey it was so difficult trying to keep it done but I managed it

There are still plenty of countries where women are softly-spoken submissive little dolls with thin arms. I'm sure if you find somewhere like that to live you might feel less depressed. It shouldn't be a reason for CTB as it's fixable.

Lol I've seen some pretty weak reasons for ctb on this site but "women have become too manly and their arms are too big" is easily the worst.

LOL. Women literally get blamed for everything including men wanting to CTB.
