Discussion My psychiatrist suggested I have a baby to give me a reason to live.

I've been given some pretty absurd and farfetched advice over the years but I think this one takes the cake. After fourteen months inpatient, we're reeeally scraping the bottom of the barrel now. It just goes to show how far removed my psychiatrist is from what I'm going through. She's supposed to be in charge of my treatment, but we don't understand one another at all. Some of you may have read my post about how I stabbed myself last year. Talk about prime mother material! Imagine telling an actively suicidal person to have a baby! Sure, how about I fuck up another person as well as myself and for what? So I don't have to suffer alone?? I could only laugh.

What is some bad advice you've been given by medical professionals, or even concerned friends or loved ones?

I was told once about my suicidal depression "wear bright colours and go to church" and I thought that was pretty bad but bringing a whole new person into the world? Seriously??

Have a baby to become less depressed? Is she even a woman? I mean, having a child can be wonderful, bu is also really hard work and really expensive, and also you need to carry it 9 months inside of you and then painfully get it out! And you're struggling to even take care of yourself, another human being that is 100% dependent on you would only worsen things!

I'm sorry, that is really awful from someone who went to freaking uni and study many years to get a freaking degree, and it is now worth less than toilet paper to my eyes and anyone sane to see how crazy this is...

As for me, one of my past psychiatrists suggested I get a girlfriend to make me feel less bad. Yeah sure, I'll just go to the local market and get a big, juicy one to ravage when I'm home. Thanks, Mr. Rimon.

Wow "get a girlfriend", that is some terrible advice. As if romantic partners are available to us all at all times, and it's our fault for not accepting one into our lives. Talk about being removed from reality! It's especially painful because many people are depressed because they can't get a romantic partner, so that advice is just twisting the knife. I'm sorry you had to take that!! It baffles me how some people become medical professionals with mindsets like that.

I eventually did it on them, and they reversed those games.

That is straight up criminal and they should be removed from any healthcare position giving "advice" like that. You deserve better. So sorry you had to go through that.

It got better. yeah I was in disbelief myself.

At least the one recommending alcohol was keeping it real. Probably what they look forward to in life.
And honestly, it does have the potential to make things less shit for approximately 15 minutes-45 minutes. There is typically a comedown but definitely don't listen to me, I still juggle drugs in a polysubstance abusive haze. No it doesn't work long term. Only having a good life works long term. If you don't have a good life...well...that's what N is supposed to be for but they are real righteous about peaceful exits.
Baby-spitter is also just riffing on what "works for me" to give advice. Or worse: second-hand advice. They might be childfree but are just going down the checklist of "life is so worth it" bullet points they've accumulated to spit out. That'll be $500/hour for that wisdom, by the way. We'll send it to collections if you can't pay.

On a still absurd note, after crying my eyes out to my therapist one day over feeling worthless and purposeless, I was told I should keep a planner to organize my life.

Still figuring out the 4d chess my therapist was playing with that one 10 years later

Sure you may be having an entirely justified existential crisis and facing your own mortality, but have you tried journalling tho In all seriousness though that suggestion is like telling you to fortify yourself with a straw hut in a hurricane. Some people are so far removed from reality it's ridiculous.

I told her it was very difficult for me as I live in the US, which is very car-centric and I don't own a car and I can't actually drive. She then proceeded to point out that these activities "aren't that far away" while looking at the Google driving directions. They were miles from my house.

I tried journalling but I was so toxic to myself on paper I made myself worse.

Some of these "professionals" are so caught up in their own rhetoric that they can't see the facts before them. Total waste of time and actively damaging.
