The only thing keeping me here is my dog. I'm worried that he'll think I abandoned him if I were to leave permanently. We've spent about 99.9999% of every day together for the past 4 years.

My sister said she'd take him if anything ever happened to me. But I'm just worried he's going to think I left him. He's the only thing I love in this world unconditionally.

Does anyone else have a similar situation?

I'm the same. Promised myself almost 4 years ago that I wouldn't ctb until my dog died, as I have no-one to look after her and there's no way I would take her with me. She's now 13 and I think she'd be too miserable and confused if I gave her up for adoption. So I'm still here, feeling guilty every time I wonder how long she will live when I don't want to.
But I figure it will happen eventually and at least we get to love each other unconditionally in the meantime. Hugs to you and your dog xoxo

same, it's been my cat though. However, I think she knows. I've held on for 4 years now, mostly because of her and finding a sliver of hope at times. Now that I don't have the sliver of hope and she's a senior cat with her own issues, I know she understands. and I know she will be taken care of after I pass.

It's nice to hear someone else in a similar position. My boy is only 4 so I don't think I'll be able to make it to the end. My situation is deteriorating quickly. Thankfully he loves going to his aunt's house and playing with her dog.

I'm in a similar boat myself . I have a seven year old cat and a six year old dog that are literally my entire world. On bad days I think about rehoming them so I can finally call it quits. But on good days I stay for them. I hate the perpetual tug of war.

I don't have pets but dogs don't understand why someone leaves, they only know of love, presence, and waiting for you to come home. After 4 years, of course you'd be concerned about abandoning your dog. Whatever your choice is that brings you comfort, I do know though, that your dog will think about you everyday and cherish the moments you two spent together.

That kind of bond is so rare and real ( ◜‿◝ )♡

i don't know if this will give you any kind of peace, but i recently read about a man that was killed in the protests in the middle east. he had a dog he loved very much and before he went to the protest, he said if something happened and he died to let his dog see his body. because the dog understood death but wouldn't understand if he thought his owner just abandoned him. i guess the dog did understand. there was a picture of the dog mourning at the grave of the man.

my point is that maybe if your dog sees you, he will understand you're not coming back and won't be as sad. i know that may not be any help, but maybe you'll find a bit of solace in making an after plan.

'When my dog goes, I go.'

Something I've read here before (and I can relate).

Thank you for saying that. My sister and I both aren't very good with people. Her whole life is animals. Even if though she's a very successful businessman woman, she works from home. But she drilled into me that if she ever died, she wanted her dogs back to see her body. She read that it gives them closure. So her and I agreed that that if either one of us died, we'd make sure our animals would see our bodies.

She just doesn't know about my suicidal tendencies. So I'm hoping what you say is true. I hope seeing the body helps them move on.

Thank you.

Fortunately my wife and daughter love our animals as much as I do, so leaving them alone is not really an issue. But anyone who is prepared to keep going through the hell that is existence just to make sure an animal is loved and protected is alright in my books. I wish all of you nothing but the best - you're good people 👍👍

I think everything is better off without me, even my pets. I know it's a messed up thing to say. :ehh:
