My youngest Cat Smudge has been coughing for the last 5 days. It's like a cough like she's got something wrong with her throat.. She head a vet appointment tomorrow at 4:30pm at a local vets called Park vets. I had to wait a week for this appointment because the vet was fully booked. Or else she would have been seen much earlier. All cos of Covid... reduced service every where. I hope it's nothing too bad. We shall see. It's obvious that it's something about her throat that is where the problem lies. I'm praying to my gods that she will be ok. Wish me luck guys!!
Tomorrow evening I'll keep you guys posted!!! Poppet!!! Please pray for Smudge!! Xxx D09F43B9 4BA3 4476 B73B C782D26AE442 D09F43B9 4BA3 4476 B73B C782D26AE442

Wishing her well. I know how hard that is - one of mine had a bad upper respiratory infection when I adopted him. The shelter was supposed to send some antibiotics along with him but I guess they forgot, so I had to do a mad scramble to get the poor guy into a vet to get it treated. Worst week of my life.

Thank you! It means a lot! Sorry to hear that your cat got ill too. I hope your cat is better now. The shelter should have definitely given you the antibiotics.
This isn't a good week for my partner and I either. Hopefully it's nothing serious and my cat will pull through.

I'm not sure. I've seen them hacking up fur balls before. But this is different. I can't explain it. When she coughs.... nothing comes up. When she purrs it sounds dull, loud and echoey within her throat. It's really strange! Hopefully tomorrow the vet will be able to tell us. Xx

Thank you just got back!!! Smudge has an infection of one of her mammaries and a lump. The breathing problem the vet couldn't ascertain unless X rays were taken. 3 different types of X ray. The vet wants to take a sample of the nipple area. We got her some antibiotics and pain relief for her nipple that she had been frantically cleaning and licking. ( Another issue) This was at a private vet. The price of finding out what the breathing problem was, was £713. Before treatment!! I swear vets charge through the roof. So we paid for the consultation and medication £ 92 and the vets going to call us back in a few days. We are going to have to take her to the PDSA vets. Because I'm not working at the moment. Private vets are really expensive and we can't afford to take her to these private vets. She's on the antibiotic Clavaseptin and the pain relief Metacam. I'll phone the PDSA vets tomorrow or Friday. To get her an appointment there. The charge for the X rays and blood taking and a few other things was before the treatment, if she should need it. The consultation was £55 , the antibiotics £7.66, and the pain relief was £29.66 ... VAT 20% too and a cab there and back. So we've spent £112. To find out... not much info. Does anyone else think private vets are extortionate?
Bless her, such a cutie. I have a cat too. Have you taken it to the VET?
Yes just got back from a private vet.
Thank you , she's a lovely Cat! A real sweet natured little lady! There's one problem that will be remedied with antibiotics.. but her breathing problem.. the vet said X rays are the only way to find out. Which would come to the best part of a grand. That's before any treatment would commence. She's got some antibiotics and pain relief for an infected mammary. We will have to take her to the PDSA vets soon.
Good luck Smudge!! Love your name it's really cute and fits you :smiling:
Thank you very much! Smudge says hi! We've just got back from the vets. Smudge has an infected mammary. The main problem that we took her in for is a cough, the vet couldn't ascertain what the issue of the cough was and the procedures for that would be extremely high. The price for just finding out would've £713. GBP. ( this is before treatment) So we will have to take her to the PDSA vets soon. We went to a private vet today. She has some antibiotics and pain meds for now and the vet is going to call us back in a few days time. I don't work at the moment so the PDSA vets it will have to be.

Ohhhh poor sweet Smudgelet! I guess they at least checked that she hasn't got anything stuck in her throat - since she's eating and drinking that doesn't seem likely but I was worried.

I'm sorry it's all so expensive - I don't know what PDSA means but I hope it's high quality care for sane prices. My he-cat was very ill a couple of weeks ago and I don't even want to think how much we spent, but there aren't any non-private vets here (except the uni clinic that charges just as much).

Here are fresh (((cuddles))) and ~~waves of wellness~~ for Smudgey

Sending little Smudgelet some positive vibes - that is a freaking cool name, by the way. :smiling: Here in the states, we only have private vets. We also have some humane society options, but those places are always so overcrowded/busy that they can't offer many services to the public. Private vets definitely are exorbitant, though. It's crazy how much it costs these days.

Does she have any crusty stuff around her eyes/nostrils? It might be a simple upper respiratory infection. Those are pretty common and easy to take care of. I just give my kitties lysine treats whenever they get one.

Thank you hun. The PDSA is a vet surgery for people on reduced income. I've taken all of my cats there before. I just make a donation for the treatment. I had 2 of my Cats put to sleep there too. That was heartbreaking but both cats were extremely ill and there was no saving them. One of my cats ( Smudges mother) had a Brain aneurism right in front of us. That was awful. Really was. I've got Smudges father, and her step brothers and uncle still here with us. They are all older cats. I'm starting to get worried about all of them because of their age. I have 5 cats in total and I'm aware that time is ticking. Thank you for your kind words. Xxx

No, no eye crust or watering. Her eyes and nose are clear as a bell. Even the vet couldn't ascertain with out X rays what it would be. It's really confusing. She's in good spirits though, except for her walking with her head down, because she's got a lump on her mammary too. She loved the vet and the receptionist though. She was being super affectionate with them lol! She's that sort of cat though. Loves people.

It's with deep regret that I have to make this particular update. Smudge had advanced BreastCancer. We found out today. We made the sad decision to put her to sleep as the Vet said it was advanced. and would spread around to her other systems, including the lungs. They sedated her and let us spend some last minutes with her as we said our goodbyes.
Smudge was a lovely Cat, we will miss her deeply. She was 13 years old. RIP baby girl, thank you for many years of joy. D1D888AF D8BE 4453 AB87 8DF27DF6AF02
The picture is Smudge after her sedation, in the Sun for the last time, as we said our goodbyes!

Poppet, words cannot express how sorry I am to hear about the passing of your lovely girl. She was a gorgeous cat. Just reading through these posts and seeing how much you tried really touched me. I had to put my cat to sleep earlier this month as well so I understand the pain. I am heartbroken for you.

You poured a lot of love into her. She absolutely had the best life any kitty could ask for. That's plain in this thread and the various posts you've made about your pets. I'm so so sorry for your loss but I'm glad she's no longer suffering. ❤️❤️

We're here for you if you need an ear or anything.

Thank you so much for your extremely kind words. It means a lot to me. It's heartbreaking isn't it? To have a beloved animal companion put to sleep.
She was a totally beautiful and friendly girl, always up for hugs and kisses. I really do feel gutted, as does my partner. We still have her father ( Sooki) her Uncle ( Wicket) her cousin ( Tyson) and her stepsister ( Niisii) here with us. They have noticed that she is not here and that she didn't come back with us. She was really close to Wicket. Bless her. Thank you once again and I'm so sorry for the loss of your cat also. I too am here if you need me!:hug: Xxxx

Thank you. Yes she was very much loved. It was a hard decision but due to her advanced years and the aggressive nature of the Cancer we didn't have any alternative but to let her go. She would have suffered a lot and even with chemo... would have only lived a year or too max, afterwards.
We have her the best life that we could. I hope she is in a better place and pain free.
