It seems like everyday I read about a new incident of murder-suicide happening all across the US.
There was one famous incident where a man shot himself after killing his pregnant girlfriend and ex-wife.

Man kills ex-gf and ex-wife

I can find tons of articles about this just in the span on 24 hours

There was also a teenager to killed his twin, his father and his dog.

Teen murder suicide

And I found these which are unrelated to Covid and make me a little sad

Elderly man kills wife in attempted murder suicide

Another elderly murder suicide but successful

Does anyone have theories about why this is happening?

I think Covid is causing mental health to deteriorate but I also heard that domestic violence is on the rise right now because more people are spending time at home. For the elderly people, I felt especially bad for them because they were just grieving spouses; Dementia and terminal illness is really hard for families to deal with in general and if they had or knew of better more peaceful options, I'm sure they would've taken that route.

Other then revenge or the elderly situation, I don't know why someone would want to do this? Any theories?
If you're wondering why I want to know. I personally wouldn't do this… I just want to understand the people who do this. I struggle a little with knowing when someone is deserving of empathy and I'm empathetic more often then not. I understand if you feel like some of these situations aren't worthy of that.

Murder-suicide is pretty selfish. A lot of it probably has to do with revenge, like you said. Wanting to take someone else out who was the cause of your pain. Maybe knowing that you'll be locked up afterwards may give you the extra burst of motivation to CTB.

There's really no need to tack on a homicide for your CTB plans though. Any grievances you have with the living won't matter after you die.

It's also possible that people are going stir-crazy from Covid restrictions. I remember trying as hard as I could to be out of the house when my roommate was home because we hated each other, so if I was forced to stay inside with him for long periods of time, I may have snapped too.

I didn't think about it like that but I guess it makes sense that some of them ctb to avoid prison and not because they want to ctb already and want to take certain people with them.

And yeah, Covid has been rough time for a lot of people

For the feminicide part it ain't new but for older people I can imagine that it can be due to aging, who knows mutual agreement or even "eh I'm getting old, no matter what I'm gonna die so let's kill this mfs", i mean sounds pretty logical to me.

I can come to understand, I mean I had said multiple times to my partner that if he ever cheat on me online and/or irl I'll either stab him (without the intention to kill) or kill him before killing myself, which is far from being a joke since I know damn right how I react when I'm betrayed.

Killing yourself after murdering someone sounds like the only thing to do for me cause what's the point in spending the rest of your life in prison if you get caught (which 99% do get caught) ? But some people also does it after realizing what they had done and can't bear with it.

Then the killing part can be multiple factors in those case : obsessions, betrayal, exploding due to mental or physical abuse going on for long or in rare cases weird people that instead of breaking up with someone feel the need to kill (heard a few stories about this).

There are basically three kinds of murder suicides:
  1. Negative murder-suicide
  2. Positive murder-suicide
  3. Suicide pact
A negative murder-suicide is really a murder or multiple murders done with ill-intentions, followed/accompanied by the murderer taking his/her own life for fear of going to prison or the gallows. Examples are suicide bombings, some school shootings, someone murdering their ex and taking their own life etc.

A positive murder-suicide is actually a murder or murders done without ill-intentions, followed by the killer taking his/her own life. Examples are a parent killing his/her children before taking their own life (as the children would be orphaned & suffer otherwise), a person killing his/her terminally ill spouse (out of compassion) and then taking their own life etc.

A suicide pact is one in which all those involved decide to CTB of their own free will but it falls on one person to kill others before CTB or for one person to wait until everyone else is dead and then commit suicide. There are plenty of examples of suicide pacts, and it's often difficult to distinguish whether it was a murder-suicide or a suicide pact.

I actually don't know too much about suicide pacts but I'm gonna look it up and see what I find just out of curiosity but I rarely hear about these.

Now that I see it clearly laid out like this, I feel like there's been an increase in negative murder-suicides which might be exacerbated by Covid.

It's not selfish at all. When your life is over you should end it in your own terms.

It's a society in social and economic freefall.

And unlike in physics there is no terminal velocity. It will continue to decay exponentially Until it hits rock bottom.
