Just thought I'd open this thread to see if there is any advice that can be shared on motivation.
I'm really struggling right now to keep motivated or to do things, I just tend to sit about all day watching crappy TV.
I used to be an avid reader but I find nowadays I don't have the concentration to do that.
I also got myself a bass guitar with the intention of learning it in order to give myself an activity, but again I find it hard to motivate myself.
I tend to only go out when I really have too, and I do what I need to then immediately back home.
I'm socially isolated therefore I never really see anyone.
I end up just feeling frustrated and like what's the point of being here, it would be really good to find out what others do that helps motivate then.
My diagnosis is autism, chronic depression and I'm probably bipolar or borderline also. I take meds, but not sure if they help, because I've never been happy or stable so I don't know how it's meant to feel.

How bad is it? Can you go outside and do things or do you have to stay at home?

I can go out when I need to for appointments, shopping, and to walk the dog. But I guess I'm struggling with doing anything unless it mandatory, I'm seeing the psychiatrist at the end of march I want a proper diagnosis and some form of care plan put in place.

I might be able to give some advice, but first I need to know - why'd you want to motivate yourself at all?

For me, it helps to simply get out and go to to a café or a library. See people and get new stimuli. Is there some activity you'd like to do?

It helps to get a diagnosis. It was hell before I got my diagnosis, because I couldn't understand what was happening to me.

See I got a diagnosis of ASD just over a year ago and I think they have decided that covers everything, but I don't think it does. I honestly believe I also have bipolar or borderline I have all. The classic symptoms of both, I just sometimes feel the services aren't geared up to deal with mental health in an appropriate way. I believe they think we are just a burden and not worth treating. Sometimes I just don't know if I have the fight in me anymore.

Try to consider whether 'willpower' isn't just a social construct to make people feel guilty for something thats out of their control. There's no way in hell you're going to conjure up 'motivation' or 'will power' out of thin air; you either want to do something (then you'll do it) or you don't, even if you wish you would want to do it if that makes any sense. That is to say you can't make yourself want to do something. You didnt choose anhedonia and you don't choose to have drive, motivation, whatever you want to call it.

This won't help you to change your situation but maybe to look at it differently and lessen the guilt and shame you might feel.
.

That's also the meaning of my signature btw: velle non discitur = wanting/ willing can't be taught/ learned.

I am in the same boat as you, I do however have to go to work cause it is mandatory in my situation also have to do the dishes/clean my apartment (ocassionaly). Finding motivation is really hard especially at work and sometimes it just feels like a miracle to go and do a task. I'd recommend you find something that you are really passionate about - not neccesseraly something you used to do or love , try some new stuff even if it is something small and unlikely "yourself" - such as playing an addictive game on your phone or pc/console if you have one.

Bipolar and borderline are nasty diagnoses. They tear your mind apart. I know, because I'm bipolar myself. The sooner you can get a correct diagnosis and correct treatment, the better. If you are bipolar and if it takes to time to get proper treatment, it's important that you have regular sleeping habits. Exercise can have a good effect and you can self-medicate with Omega-3 and magnesium.

Momentum, habit and routine are helpful. Getting something to be automatic takes motivation out of the equation.

If you had to work you would, if it was mandatory.

Seems you have the resources to check and spend on a blood hormone total Testosterone levels, after twenty years I did, had a bad blood result, got a shot and I'm okay.

I believe this motivation you are looking for does not exist, it does not come in a pill, well my Testosterone shot, sure helps a lot!!
However it's not the only thing, but the dream or the idea of something which pulls you a little, but we need to push through too.

The experience of feeling good after completing tasks of a to do list, its rewarding, knowing that feeling and knowing you can reach it does motivate me.

I still need to push, and about whatever, "Who the fuck cares? I'll do it anyway!"

Sometimes , people need to feel hunger to go hunt and eat. You need to feel wanting to pee, to go to the bathroom. Or we need a blocked nose to blow our nose.

Necessity is the mother of many things.

We needed to invent the room.

Man, you got me thinking on "motivation", fuck I'm beginning to think that's a hype , but not the real thing.....
Maybe what we need to hear is a story that shapes our mind into creating somthing like a movie that inspires feelings and emotions in us, dreams, hopes and wishes, and that is what motivate us....

I will try to create this story to motivate myself!!!

Thanks bro! You got me thinking in the right direction!!
