Hi,

I am about to go to a local money exchange and pay D by Money Gram.
I intend to show my own ID if asked and I will be paying by cash and give my correct address if asked. I am in UK
My concern is that it is a large payment and I have never used Money Gram (or WU)
Could a suspicion be raised?
What do I say\write If they ask who and what is the payment for? Could Money Gram call me to ask questions on the transaction? What do I say if they ask me questions?
Instead of doing one large payment shall I do 4 payments over 4 days from 4 different sites? Will that be better?

You are over thinking it. People use WU because it doesn't scrutinise its users like bank transfers, paypal etc.

Yeah def over thinking.

They don't give a f why.

I'm considering mg too but I just feel less trust with doing it that way I don't know why. Like sending cash in a letter, idk. BTC feels safer in that regard

For non US buyers how do you work out the amount to send to D.
Do you just look up online currency conversion and convert US$1000 to your local currency and give that figure to the Money Gram agent for that to be sent to D in MX$ ?

in UK at todays rate online currency conversion shows US$1000 = MX$21439
Went to my local Money Gram location and asked to quote me to send US$1000 to MX and I will pay all commission and fees and they gave me figure of MX$19530 that the recipient will receive.
That is almost 2000 out
I wish D will just quote a MX$ price for non US buyers.

Hi
You are definitely over thinking this. I understand your concerns. I paid D at WU yesterday. I have also have never used WU or MG and have never made an international transfer before. I was very nervous. I have an overactive imagination and could picture everyone stopping what they were doing and staring at me when I told the clerk that I wanted to make a money transfer to Mexico. Of course this didn't happen.
The lady at WU didn't ask to see my ID. She just asked me for my name and address. I had written D's contact information on a paper. The lady asked to see the paper. She typed everything into the computer. I didn't have to fill out anything myself. She didn't ask me who D was or why I wanted to send him money. There was nothing to worry about. It was all over in 5 minutes.
Don't worry. People make money transfers all the time. There is nothing suspicious about it.
Just say "Good morning. I would like to make a money transfer please". Give them your real name and address. D he's going to ship your package to the address on the receipt. If you give a different address, someone else is going to receive your package. If they ask you for a reason why you are sending money, tell them that you are sending money as a gift to a relative or a friend. I doubt they will call you. Just make one payment. They keep records of your previous transactions. It will look suspicious, if you go to 4 different locations and make 4 payments to the same person in a few days

You'll be fine.

I've sent thousands of dollars by Western Union (before Moneygram was popular) and they don't care one whit about why you're doing what you're doing. They are doing their job, and that's all. You are especially fortunate (relatively, of course) that it is holiday time, If they ask, you can send you are sending the money for friends or family to use for Christmas. The person who processes the transfer will likely say, "Oh, that's nice," and then move right along.

People from all over the world send money to Mexico, so there's no worry there about looking out of place.

I was thinking there's also the option of declaring it as support money due to covid issues. That's another fortunate element of the crap situation of things. There's no questioning support money in the face of covid.

Should I just look up online what the currency conversion rate today is for USD to MX and base my amount on that?
Todays conversion is shows USD$1000 = MX$21911
So do I just ask Money Gram for the recipeint to get MX21911 and I pay them in my currency (UK£)?

When you go to MG, tell them you want to make a money transfer to Mexico. They will ask you how much money you are sending. You pay in your own currency. You don't have to worry about the amount of MXN. Just tell the clerk at MG that you want to send 900 USD to Mexico. MG will do the conversion to MXN for you.

Yes that is what I did I asked to send US$1000 to mx and he did his calculations and said it will cost me £724 and the recipient will get MX19530

but when I check online currency conversion (xe.com) US$1000 = £749 and £749=MX21891

I don't want to underpay him.

Try not to worry so much. MG knows what they are doing. You are fine. The value of currency fluctuates every day. The day you went, the value of 1000 USD was €724. You were OK. You won't under pay D. D well except the conversion rate that MG gives you. You can send him a copy of your receipt when you email D.

Don't panic. The Moneygram folks are just doing their job.

It's not personal, it's not about you, it isn't because they are suspicious. It's just what they do.

It is not illegal to send money to someone - even if he or she is an illegal drug dealer.

With moneygram do you hand over cash at the office or can you do electronic payment as well ? How exactly does it work?

You have to go to the office and pay in cash. D won't accept a payment with your credit card. He says that MG/WU will block any transfers to Mexico because of fraud concerns.

I went to the MG point it was inside some somalian bazaar and looked pretty fucking shady but he's on the moneygram.com official vendor list. He told me i need a name, money and location...do you receive a document proof or receit after you handed over the money? I don't want to get scammed or make mistakes

Yes you will get document proof/receipt. Don't think too much. In my case I had to give an ID (driving license)

Why would D even accept MG or WU? It's so risky for him.

Not really, as he's not using his real name. I'm sure he makes fake IDs regularly to do collections at WU or MG

He asked me too. I will not worry too much. He might be contemplating to offer you WU or MG based on your country
Good point - countries have different fraud levels.
