So my therapist insisted on me trying out #Mindfulness with him!
I've never done that before so was curious. He asked me to sit on the middle of his floor in his office, legs crossed, back straight and eyes closed! he said some things to help me relax and then he placed a grape in my mouth! he told me to concentrate on the grape, how it feels in my mouth, then to bite down and allow the juice to go down my throat and gentle chew and swallow the grape! as he was telling me to do this, I suddenly burst into fits of laughter! it just came out of nowhere, but doing what I was with a grape and the way he was speaking just had me giggling! I didn't mean to be rude or to disrespect what he was asking me to do, but when I get nervous I giggle.
My therapist said he wasn't happy with me for not trying to put more of an effort into what he was asking me to do! I felt guilty.
So I've promised him tomorrow when I go to his office and do the mindfulness with him, that I will not laugh and I will try to be more respectful. I'm now trying to teach myself not to laugh at the most inappropriate of time..Oops!

Your therapist sounds like he needs to lighten up a bit! We all respond differently to new to us techniques. What more effort could you have put in? At least you tried. Would it really have been so bad if he'd had have a giggle too?!

That's a new take on mindfulness. It's the grape that gets me, i'm not surprised you found it funny so don't be too hard on yourself.

Wow, what a shitty thing for him to say to you.

The thing about mindfulness is that what you experienced and how you reacted... it's okay, it's normal, it's expected.

If things come up, you allow them in, and you allow them to pass through you, and then you gently return to the centered state. That's literally the point of it.

Blocking things out, like purposely trying to stifle or smother something as natural as a laugh, is the antithesis of the philosophy behind mindfulness. He shouldn't be doing mindfulness exercises with clients if he doesn't even understand the basics.

I felt so very uncomfortable reading this that I was bawling laughing. If a therapist tried to touch me, let alone put something in my mouth, I think I'd implode and vanish out of existence. Just ... wow.

Thank you for all your replies, I understand what each of you are saying, and I did feel uncomfortable so that's why I giggled. Not to be disrespectful. I've decided not to try mindfulness anymore as it just won't work for me and I know I will only laugh again or go crazy
