i really really really really dont want any media attention surrounding my suicide but i know if i jump it will almost definitely attract some. if i put in my note that i dont want my name or age included, do you reckon they'd do as i wished or just say fuck it and do it anyway? i feel like the only way i could contain my privacy is if i hung myself in my own home but even then its not definite. i know once im dead it shouldnt matter but the idea of being in the news makes me so unbearably uncomfortable. i tried googling media rules around reporting suicide and it just seems they can do what they want (UK).

I don't even want people making facebook/instagram posts about me and I'd never want my name used in a person's ''support suicide awareness" posting. But I can definitely see it happening as well as our local news site reporting my suicide. Which is cringe to me because they are so low quality. I don't really want my insanely personal, upsetting and private ordeal sitting next to articles about the local footy team.

I think most suicides are not in the news. There are just sooo many every day. But it could happen that exactly yours will be in the news, so you never know...

Here in my country suicides usually aren't reported because there is this consensus among the big media professionals that reporting suicides results in more suicides because of copycats and normalization, so they rarely report it or talk about it. My country is less politically correct than the UK, so technically I would expect UK to follow similar guidelines.

Im in the UK also and its rare that they actually name anyone. Usually they'll state "area cordoned off by police as body has been found etc etc"

Then they usually do an update stating that there was no suspicious circumstances. They very rarely name anyone. I live in a town with a suicide jumping spot in the UK and they never name anyone.

Anything i have seen reported has usually came from their parents stating more needs done for mental health or their son/daughter has been let down from the system and the usual bull about how they were a loving child and happy and never seen it coming.

I'm gonna ride the SN wave in a hotel and leave a very convincing note specifically detailing to not have any media attention at all.

the only times I've seen names named, are either when the person has been reported missing before hand, and their body found, or if the family goes on a anti suicide/mental health campaign.
The media are pretty good on privacy and sensitive issues (well our local ones are) at the end of the day, it depends on your friends/family

I wish I could tell you different, but once the next of kin has been notified, it is a matter of public record. Sometimes the news media are assholes and, if they're able to get it, release information before next of kin has been notified. The more sensational the news, the less decorum and restraint they have.

I have a feeling that some of my details might be in the media because of my particular situation. I'd rather everyone just instantly forget about my past existence when I'm gone.

I sympathize with you wanting your and your family's business not made public, but I don't think there is anything we can do to 100% keep our suicide out of the news. CTB in a major hotel might make the company try to keep it quiet to avoid negative publicity, or ctb around US election day then all the news will only be about Trumps tantrums.

I am always an avid reader of the news and don't recall ever seeing someone's name mentioned in the media who committed suicide unless they were famous.

Maybe that's different in some countries but it would be considered tacky to say the least to publish a person's name who committed suicide in many places. Publishing the names of people who do that is not newsworthy usually.

I suggest you to take a trip to Italy lmao sadly I noticed that suicide news have been worn off social networks pages (I mean, if some suicide news appears on google then they don't talk about it on Facebook UNLESS it's for an economic or covid related reason). And when it comes to tv, I've heard talking about suicides TWO times in 21 years.
And whey they talk about it, articles follow the pattern:

"XY killed himself. Nobody knews the tremendous and selfish act he's done. He/she leaves twl children and a wife/a husbad behind who will cry him/her forever"

Besides this, I don't think there's the chance to not being displayed on the news, especially during these times.
You could ask in your notes but they'd probably say "he asked not to be displayed" in the news. Tbh i hate the journalism industry

People jump in front of trains every month in this town and they only ever make the paper and it doesn't release names. A couple of times it said the age and sex.

The old news saying is "If it bleeds it leads." So, generally local news runs a story, but not always. Flip of a coin really, but nothing you would leave behind asking for discretion will make too much difference to media in deciding what story to run.

You shouldn't worry about that because even if they did, they wouldn't include your name. You may end up in a local tabloid (what journalism isn't these days) if you went missing for a while and were found but other than that you won't end up in the paper. The media is discouraged from announcing suicides as it's advertising they don't want (for cynical purposes).

The UK media is so weird, almost predatory.

If there is a story about you it'll only be there for a day before it's replaced by the next drama piece.
