Holy shit.

This guy was arrested and thrown in jail over failure to appear in court to address an outstanding debt of $2,376 for a fucking ambulance ride, smuggled in strychnine, and CTB'ed in custody.

What a fucking dystopian nightmare the United States is for poor people. He had literally nothing that they could take from him to satisfy the debt, so throw him in jail and that's how they profit off him.

But he wasn't having it.

Seriously? I cant believe this. My unpaid debts to hospitals for psych stays and ambulances are half the reason why I cant do this anymore either. I have nothing and all of the trips were involuntary... Its absolutely a nightmare

Being put in jail, having my checks garnished and my credit destroyed is simply impending. Its going to happen at some point. Its so hard to forgive my parents for this and take on the forgiving narrative they "didnt know what else to do." They literally destroyed my life calling cops on me so many times, having no plan to work out that payment, taking no responsibility for how violent theyve also been toward me. It breaks me. Of course I was going through things but I didnt ask for my financial future to be trashed. And whats worse is the problems I had going in were never resolved. I wonder how many people are also in this predicament

That sucks, I'm sorry to hear it. I feel you, for sure. I went through bankruptcy just a few years ago myself and it felt devastating.

I don't think any author in the past was imaginative enough to imagine a dystopia as complete as the US.

That law is now being abolished in Utah as we speak (the whole debtor's prison thing). Technically you can still get a bench warrant for failing to appear in court, but 9 times out of 10, cops have better things to do than track down debtors.

For the poster above, NY actually has some pretty good protection laws for those who owe money. You can often keep a house, car, etc. The chances of anything like this happening there, or anywhere really, are dwindling. Just attend court dates, if any, even if you have no money.

Yes, it's really scary. I wish I could afford to leave the US. It is ok if u are well off because u can buy your freedom then, but if u are poor u are very vulnerable in this country. It's a two caste system at this point. The haves and have nots.

I don't think that's necessarily true in some parts of the US.

Well the issue is not debt - the issue is not appearing in court. If you go to court, even if you have nothing, they can't arrest you. The man in the original article ignored repeated orders to appear. Open your mail, kids.

Edit: for what it's worth, I agree with the debt system as a whole being bullshit, with medical billing especially out of control. The amounts are exorbitant without fail. But you could owe a million bucks and they couldn't touch you so long as you go through the motions, and in some states/counties you can actually keep a fair amount of your shit even if you do end up having to go to court. But of course, it's still incredibly demotivating and depressing to live in a society that thrives on debt.

Being in the UK with a universal health system, i cannot imagine a decision where i would have to contemplate giving any of my children healthcare vs bankruptcy. Just so alien to me.

I went by ambulance to the hospital a couple times this year. Hospitals are so unequipped to deal with chronic illness. They haven't the slightest clue, they just throw meds at you that further degenerate your condition, expose you to radiation unnecessarily, and in some cases gaslight and berate you for wasting their time.

If Dr.s put in the same effort that they did for achieving their medical degree in investigating a patient's symptoms and illness then the world would be a much better place. Unfortunately, not all, but most Dr.s, once they are given their medical licenses and open up a clinic, their attention becomes more focused on their salaries and appeasing the insurance companies that provide him with eligible patients. Doctors should get paid after they get you better, not before.

I think they should make med school cheaper and pay doctors less, then that would weed out the greedy ones and doctors would then be people who really want to help. A doctor ruined my life too, otherwise I wouldn't be on this website.

That death sounds like hell according to Wikipedia

"After injection, inhalation, or ingestion, the first symptoms to appear are generalized muscle spasms. They appear very quickly after inhalation or injection — within as few as five minutes — and take somewhat longer to manifest after ingestion, typically approximately 15 minutes. With a very high dose, the onset of respiratory failure and brain death can occur in 15 to 30 minutes. If a lower dose is ingested, other symptoms begin to develop, including seizures, cramping, stiffness,[33] hypervigilance, and agitation.[34] Seizures caused by strychnine poisoning can start as early as 15 minutes after exposure and last 12 – 24 hours. They are often triggered by sights, sounds, or touch and can cause other adverse symptoms, including hyperthermia, rhabdomyolysis, myoglobinuric kidney failure, metabolic acidosis, and respiratory acidosis. During seizures, mydriasis (abnormal dilation), exophthalmos (protrusion of the eyes), and nystagmus (involuntary eye movements) may occur.[21]

As strychnine poisoning progresses, tachycardia (rapid heart beat), hypertension (high blood pressure), tachypnea (rapid breathing), cyanosis (blue discoloration), diaphoresis (sweating), water-electrolyte imbalance, leukocytosis (high number of white blood cells), trismus (lockjaw), risus sardonicus (spasm of the facial muscles), and opisthotonus (dramatic spasm of the back muscles, causing arching of the back and neck) can occur. In rare cases, the affected person may experience nausea or vomiting.[21]

The proximate cause of death in strychnine poisoning can be cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, multiple organ failure, or brain damage.[21]"

If it was that painful, then how come guards didn't find him sooner? Maybe it didn't effect him that way. That's the problem with drugs, you don't know how it will effect you

the guards don't do shit. women straight up have babies in prison and the guards don't care or are very slow at getting help. people die in custody all the time. also, given ALL of those disturbing side-effects, I am certain he was in writhing pain when he died. It's fucking rat pesticide

I went to the ER One time and saw an ER doctor for about three minutes because I wasn't sure if my finger was accidentally broken, it ended up just being sprained. I got around a $2000 bill for those three minutes.

That's $667 PER MINUTE.

How can anyone afford that 'medical care' in the United States on the average wage is now? If everyone charges $1 million for everything, food, rent, medical care, you name it, it no longer becomes an issue of being responsible, people can't afford very much anymore.

And they're all for things that you really need to have just to survive, not luxuries. For example an oil change used to be around $20, 10 years later it's $60. What the hell are people supposed to do? Just die on the streets?

That's the United States of America.

And then add the stupid credit score system that's brutal and unfair and ridiculous...

Should people work at least two jobs, three jobs? When do they get to live? If you spend the majority of your time working and having to run errands and almost no time to even see your family or friends, is that freedom? What kind of life is that?
