Discussion Making your own SN?

Has anyone tried this yet? I found prague powder/curing salt (93.75% NaCl, 6.25% NaNO2) at a store and bought some.

SN is much more soluble in boiling water (160g/100mL) than NaCl (39g/100mL), so I'm planning on just mixing boiling water with the curing salt and repeatedly boiling it down and filtering out the precipitate, which should be mostly NaCl.

From what I've read online, I don't think it's possible to get higher than ~75% purity with this or similar methods, but if I took 15g-20g of whatever I'm left with, only 2g of it needs to be SN anyways right?

Can any chemists help out?

It looks like SN is much more soluble in pure ethanol than NaCl is (albeit in much smaller amounts than with water), so you could use ~4.25L (a little less than 1 gallon) of 200 proof food grade ethanol (~$85 online) and mix in a pack of curing salt ($10), stir it around at 77F / 25C for a while (maybe 20 minutes?), and then filter off any solids with a large coffee filter and let the solution evaporate outside for a few days. Only the powder would remain, and you'd be left with approximately 10g SN and 2.2g of NaCl. That's ~82% purity.

Keep in mind that the pure ethanol on amazon meant for labs is called "denatured ethanol" and is mixed with a bitterant to deter consumption. It would still work, but it would make the SN taste much much worse. Better to buy the food grade ethanol from another site, but it has to be 200 proof or you'll end up with a higher amount of NaCl in the final product.

Takes a lot longer than I'd expected. Sadly don't have the privacy to try the ethanol method, or I'd test that out too.

Interested in trying this out with water as well. Can you give more details about filtering it out? Like boil, dissolve, filter through a coffee filte... and the stuff in the filter I pitch? Or is that the good stuff I want to keep?

Does anyone know what the ratio of prague powder to ethanol should be? Like how many grams of prague powder per Liter of ethanol?

This thread suggests 1lb (0.45kg) prague powder every Liter of ethanol, is this correct? Any chemistry people know?

And does it make a difference if the prague powder is 6% or 12%?

Bump
