Not a doc but it is a beautifully animated film rooted in reality. It deals with topics that would be too painful to see in a documentary/real people format. It's close to my heart-

The Breadwinner

This is really beautiful.

Both of these documentaries are heartbreaking. I always shed a few tears whenever I rewatch them :(

One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Also anything by Werner Herzog.

Here's some good suicide documentaries too. The last one really hits home for me. The guy who talks about how he was going to blow his head off with a shotgun, but stopped on account of his dog, is pretty much me in a nutshell. I don't own pets, but his disposition/feelings are very much like mine. I'm also not a comptetive person at all and he's absolutely right in saying that in this world no one cares about you unless you're some jacked up optimist who's on an unstoppable winning streak.

This two part documentary series on Columbine is also really great and is probably the best one ever done on the subject. Highly recommend watching, assuming you're interested in the topic.

I can't remember if it was in this documentary or I read about it somewhere else, but one of the US attorneys made a comment after his death how it's ridiculous that they were at all blamed for his suicide because they made him a six month prison offer. As if six months in prison and being a felon isn't a huge deal and wouldn't induce a tremendous amount of stress.

I've watched all of these except Welcome To Leith, and they are really good. Evil Genius in particular was really good. The story of Gypsy Blanchard has stuck with me too. I've thought about that a lot after watching it. Abducted In Plain Sight is just crazy.

Watch the weird weekends series.

The vice documentary about Aokigahara is really good too. So are their other documentaries about Hikkikomori.

Some more really great documentaries, that I'd highly recommend watching. This time focusing on lonely deaths and hikikomori. Generally speaking, I love watching documentaries about eastern countries, but especially when they focus on social ills that rest close to my own experience/heart. In many ways, the problems in Japan and South Korea are a microcosm of things happening across the entire world now. Personally, I'd consider these documentaries not only perfectly represent my present, but my inevitable future as well. Assuming I don't finally manage to kill myself someday, that is.

Ah, a fellow "weird documentary" enthusiast. :D
I've watched Three Identical Strangers and Boy Interrupted as well. There are so many bizarre stories out there - one wouldn't believe they were real but rather originated from a screenwriter who lost their marbles a long time ago. Thankfully those documentaries exists to prove us all wrong - stranger than fiction on every level. The ones I posted were only those I could come up with at the top of my head.
I'm thankful for this thread and will definitely come back to it whenever I got some time on my hands to add some more to my "collection". Haha.

Britain's High Dependency Psych Ward (Prison Documentary)

Since its foundation 150 years ago, Broadmoor Hospital has fascinated the public and the media, but there are many misconceptions about what it does and the patients it is responsible for. Now for the first time, it has opened its doors to a TV camera crew, giving unprecedented insight into its patients and the work that is carried out to treat and rehabilitate them. The film is the result of a five-year collaboration between the trust and award-winning director Olivia Lichtenstein and producer Jonathan Levi. Filmed over nine months, from Christmas 2013 to August 2014, the crew were given unique access and support from Broadmoor staff to help them build a complete picture of the hospital from admission to discharge.

One of my most favorite documentaries ever. A really raw and unflinching look at modern life in Japan, but also just life in this world in general nowadays.

And here's another one which is super memorable. Probably one of the most shocking twists of anything I've ever watched. The way it's delivered genuinely shook me, which is extremely rare for anything to manage to do.

Real-life drama about the murder of 20-year-old Sophie Lancaster who in 2007 was kicked to death in a park by a gang. Her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, was also severely beaten an ended up in a coma. The two of them were attacked because they were dressed as goths.

Very interesting documentary that I watched a couple months back on the origins of pepe the frog and how it managed to influence internet culture and, by extension, the wider culture of society itself. Personally, I had no idea where pepe had come from and that it was some guy called Matt Furie who had originally created him for some Beavis & Butthead type comic series way back in in the early to mid 2000s and has been fighting a losing battle ever since for trying to retain control over his creation.

I've seen Japan A Story of Love and Hate several times now and can only agree, it is a fantastic, melancholic slice-of-life documentary.
