I had a really good experience at the mental hospital, but it seems like I am an exception.

I was voluntarily in a psych ward back in January 2016. At the time, it was indeed a nice break from life, but it didn't give me any long-term healing or perspective. Overall I'd say it's not worth it. If you want a break from life, I'd recommend you take a week off work/school/whatever and go see some mountains or forests.

I have had multiple traumatizing experiences in my life during my stays. I have been inpatient several times throughout my life. In youth and adulthood. I was never there voluntarily. Usually as the result of a poor attempt. Stomach pumped after my first attempt, I was force fed after attempting to starve myself, and told that I was "seeking" attention by one of the staff. This was during my first experience as a twelve year old. Needless to say, it did the job. I never was able to CTB in the facility which I always felt served the essential purpose. Once I was deemed safe they would put me into a step down program and eventually I worked my way back into the public school. This cycle has carried on for years. Best wishes, OP.

One of the reasons why I am here as well. I was just 14, and it was traumatising as hell.

OP, you know you can check yourself in, right? If you're being sincere in your post, that is. Walk in or call and say you're having thoughts of killing yourself and they'll take you.

I've been 7 times and counting and my experiences vary based on how I was doing mentally and the facility. Some experiences were traumatic, but generally that's the rare exception. Most experiences have been more boring than anything else. They might mess with your meds and require you to go to group therapy. They make sure you're set up with treatment after you leave.

It is kinda a break too, though. Usually when I'm in the hospital it feels somewhat restful. For one, you get away from the stressors of work and real life and whatnot. But also it gives you a break from having to keep yourself safe and fight to stay alive. You can kinda just let go of all of that and rest.

I've only ever heard horror stories, in regards to inpatient mental health facilities.

I purposely lie to the doctor about how I'm really feeling, out of concern that I would be involuntarily committed.

Yes, same. I dont even think I do it just because of fear (although that's a big part of it) but I literally can't say out loud how I'm feeling I feel so ashamed and embarrassed so I play down how I feel. It's terrible. I've got a medication review on Tuesday and I just know I won't tell the doc how bad things really are. Tbh I've made my mind up that I'll be checking out soon anyway so it doesn't really matter.

I've been getting put inpatient since I was 13 and I think hospitals are 50/50! When ur in the kids unit it absolutely blows but I feel the adult wards are nice. I would just do ur research and see how you feel about the facility as a whole! Usually the ones meant for "long term" stay (so more than 3 days) are nicer it's usually a facility that isn't located directly in the hospital. I definitely feel like it is a nice break when you need to stabilize. Wishing you the best of luck 💌

the minor psych ward is not good because they will abuse of their power. A bunch of years ago i got sent there when i was 17. The adult one for me is an okay experience. It is a nice break to focus on reading writing coloring etc but they just put medication and little help is offered overall. If it helps depends on the person and why overall

My city has like a crisis center. It's an alternative to the hospital if you just feel like you need a break. You can stay up to four days. Maybe see if you have something like that in your area

If you want to seek help at a psych ward, that is your prerogative. I, myself was 5150'd for a week in November 2021, were I had a decent stay. It was nerve wracking as my mother lost hours staying with me, but it wasn't that bad as I had a new outpatient meeting that month. I had pizza several days in that week, however I highly doubt you would get any pizza due to "budget concerns". Thankfully, I wasn't force fed food or drink, nor forced to take medicine (I took no medicine while in the psych ward). I never was forced in a straight jacket or bounded up like what you might see on Television. However, the price of a psych ward, especially if you aren't covered, may be crippling. If you aren't in a good financial state, I would advise against psych wards, overall. Anyway, I would overall recommend doing what you want. Sorry for such a long essay-like response. Mental health in America is a circus, don't know how it's like where you're at. If you ever need to talk, I'm down to talk whenever. Best regards.

It depends on a place you are staying. If it is England or Germany I would say give it a go. If you are from Eastern Europe than definitely no

even if you voluntary go, your freedom is taken away. doesnt mean you can be let out at anytime.

I had a good experience at a long term treatment center. I was there 3 weeks. If you're located in the US I can tell you more.

I understand what you mean when i think abt it it feels like some kind of validation fantasy but irl it was like a horror comedy show. I was in the psych ward for 11 weeks it felt like a century went by. I realized that mental health proff in the US don't actually care and can't do anything to help instead just keep you locked up. All of us lied just to get out of there only for some of them to be right back after a couple days or weeks to lie again because the mental health industry works against us not with us.
