I have invested in a kickstarter. It's this key that you plug into the USB port and it just wipes your device immediately. It works on all kinds of devices. Sounds perfect for so many people here. Screenshot 20201029 044636 comkickstarterkickstarter

Believe me. I have had the police digital forensics search my shit.
Which is why (a) I brought this thing and (b) I would never think I could destroy a hard drive beyond rescue

Sounds dangerous lol, imagine someone using it to wipe proof of their own misdeeds on someone else's computer, or some prankster using it at public places like libraries, schools, or government buildings.

That said, I'd still want one for when I go actually.

Nothing against op but I would be pretty cautious trusting this to any extent until it has been proven.

Well, they're cheap. I've picked up 3,which will be available early next year. But any kickstarter is a risk. From what I've looked into of it, it looks legit. So I'm sure there'll be a couple of people out there that would want one for whatever reason.

I plan to smash the hard drive.

Same here.

@kkatt what's the problem in destroying a regular HDD beyond repair? Smashing it open, retrtieving the plates, cutting them into pieces and scattering. You think any authorities would try to do anything with that, especially in case of some regular suicider?

Just use Darik's Boot and Nuke and dump it into a body of water while it is still on. Free of charge, no need to give money to a product that promises nothing new and doesn't even exist yet.

If you plan to non-recoverably cipher your data then I think downloading and executing WannaCry or Petya ransomware is a better opition. It's for free, costs no effort and is very effective. No one is able to decipher data destroyed by that viruses without paying the ransom to the hackers.

Some information concerning SDD erasure

You can boot any freely available live distro and do the same thing for free.

I don't think this is a scam but it doesn't seem to do anything more than free tools already do. Wiping the device is also not immediate but can take hours depending on your drive. The best thing to do is to use encryption on your PC and use a strong password. That way the data on the drive is unreadable without the password even if you don't erase it.

I didn't dig into this, but if there is no encryption, whatever you put in the usb - it won't wipe anything. Some microprocessors might lite up, but the information is still on you HDD, and I'm quite sure for SSD too. Wiping takes time, the only fast way is fire or the microwave. I wouldn't even trust a hammer for this.

Would an acid bath be enough to skunk hard disk plates, meaning like the stuff used for etching,? if anyone knows.

My issue is their secret patent pending process which can over complicate and allow for other issues aside from a linear encrypt/decrypt. Why do they need to re-engineer the usage of blowfish 448? As someone pointed out above, the encryption options already exist and things like this tend to take advantage of people who haven't spend the time to learn about it.

afaik - if you don't use encrypted images or drives - one possibility is software which overwrites the whole drive/partition with data/trash and then erases it.
some software even let u set how many times this process of writing trash and erasing should be repeated.
but takes some time. for big drives hours.

should be even freeware or shareware available for that. at least for win systems. linux, os x - i dont know.

I can only say what I know from being investigated by police digital forensics
I just had an update from the creator,so I thought I'd share with you what I have. I'm not sure that I should be doing this, but if I were to trust anyone,it would be this group.
I'm sorry if they're a bit muddled up; I don't see too well. There are more, but we can only upload 8 attachments.
