Does anybody like the band Joy Division. They were an amazing band destined to get even better. They were only going for 2 or 3 years but sadly the singer Ian Curtis hanged himself when he was only 23 years old. He was apparently going through horrendous mental problems though. As a massive fan of the band I was just wondering if there's any other fans here?

New Order > Joy Division imo.

JD were okay but they are severely overrated due to Curtis' early death which has been overly romanticised since. There are better bands of this genre.

I agree New Order are great aswel. Can't really choose one over the other as they're both brilliant. There would be no New Order though but they had to recreate the band because of Ian Curtis's death.

I'm a huge Joy Division and Ian Curtis fan. After a friend turned me on to them years ago, I used to listen to some of their tracks every day. I regard Closer as a perfect album.

Ian's wife said he told her he always wanted to die young. His band mates were clueless fucks who said they hardly ever read the lyrics, just played their instrumental parts.

I liked Joy Division a lot but New Order is one of my all time favorite bands. I will say that Ian Curtis had a better voice than Bernard Sumner but I preferred New Order's use of dance rhythms and electronic instrumentation over JD's more guitar driven sound. Ian Curtis had epilepsy and started having grand mal seizures. This and other factors caused severe depression and led to his suicide.
Perhaps the most tragic band of all was Badfinger. Loved them too. The lead vocalist Peter Ham hung himself in 1975 and another band member, Tom Evans, did the same in 1983. The band was screwed over by their manager and were left penniless.

Tbf this probably also applies to the New Order lyrics they actually wrote.

What are, in your opinion, some of the better bands in the genre? In the past, I've been very disappointed by some bands said to be in Joy Division territory. I did like the first (?) album by a band called The Grinning Plowman called Days of Deformity. Didn't care for their later material I heard.

I loved a few songs I heard from that band, I had no idea the singer hung himself. I was never introduced to their music until about 8 years ago. I luv the song, 'Love will tear us apart', now I will have to spend half the day looking them up and listening to their music!

The movie "Control" is pretty good. It's about the lead singers life.

Yes. I'm a Joy Division fan but I started to listen to them some years ago. They composed many good songs in a short period of time. Ian was a genius. Great lyrics and voice.

I've been a fan of JD for probably about five years, and having rabbitholed on the band's history as well as New Order I know far more than anyone should know; but they were for a long time my favorite band, now a close second only to Magazine. Ian Curtis is still my favorite lyricist, though; it's a shame he never got around to writing.

Pretty much everything I would've said has already been said, but I'm actually glad New Order didn't become Joy Division 2.0 and curved a bit from the path they were on with the synths. That said, Movement is still my favorite album of theirs—the Peel session version is sublime. If you're looking for more of that gloomy, icy post punk, it's on Youtube and I definitely recommend it.

My absolute favorite band. He had epilepsy. I guess back then the treatment was just as bad as the disease and he just couldn't take it any longer.
Saw Peter Hook a couple of times. Even got his tshirt that he takes off and throws into the crowd after the show.

I'm a bit envious!

On top of being a great lyricist Ian Curtis was a genuinely nice guy apparently when he worked in the Job Centre people said he was so kind and helpful towards people. The song "She's lost control" was about a girl who had a fit in the job centre while he was working there.

Not too long ago I came across a picture of Ian and some of his co-workers, probably where you mentioned. Looked like it might have been a Christmas party. Wish I'd saved it.

He was incredibly handsome. I think He was inspired by Bowie and ZiggyStardust,. Life on Mars. Ian was so young whsn he married and became a dad. Then didnt he meet that girl from Belgium when he was on tour ?. Such a loss of an icon. RIP.

Yes she was a Belgian journalist, had an affair which ruined his marriage which is probably what tipped him over the edge as well as his epilepsy. I agree he was influenced by Bowie but I'd say more by Iggy Pop and the Sex Pistols who he would see at Manchester.
Iggy Pop's The Idiot was the record on his turntable when he was found dead.

"'I struggle between what I know is right in my own mind, and some warped truthfulness as seen through other people's eyes who have no heart, and can't see the difference anyway"......Ian Curtis.

A young kind man and wise soul....i identify with much of his sensitivity.. I think his legacy lives on. The film ' control ' is revealing!.
