In my country, people often say that to a suicidal person. It drives me nuts every time I heard that.

You guys would understand that it absolutely doesn't make any sense. That's like saying use the energy to freeze water instead of boiling it. It doesn't work the other way around.

Do you guys ever heard similar things? What other ignorant and unhelpful pep talks have you ever heard?

I've not heard that one before, what utter bullshit! The one that annoys me most is "you don't want to die, you just want to start living" like there are absolutely no barriers to doing that?? Makes me so mad lol

There are so many stupid quotes out there that people use. 'everything happens for a reason'- tell that to the paraplegic who got hit by a drunk driver. 'What doesn't kill you makes your stronger'- or it makes you injured and in pain.

My dad sends me stupid quotes all the time. You just gotta ignore it and try not to get upset over stupid remarks.

Well no... there can be benefits to choosing to live. The person in your example wants to live, what is the benefit in burning? None. That example is so off lol

Life and human psychology are extraordinarily complex.

But most people cannot seem to advance past generic caption, broad brushstroke thinking, when ideally every situation should be evaluated as a unique fact, by taking all the finer details into account, as far as is possible. The finer details are crucial, and make life what it is.

Blocky slogans like that are violent and oppressive and negate the singularity and uniqueness of the individuals they target.

Hmm. It wasn't off to me, since life can feel like a burning building. It's an example that's been used from Buddha to Stoic philosopohers to David Foster Wallace. For a true pro-lifer who is Christian, the benefit is in letting an outside force end the life god gave one rather than ending it themselves.

Many suicidal people view their situation as similar to being stuck in a burning building. For them, ctb'ing is equivalent to jumping from a burning building, with the burning building being a metaphor for their lives.

Sounds like something The Sphinx would say ,
" Your temper is very quick, my friend. But until you learn to master your rage your rage will become your master "
"When you care what is outside, what is inside cares for you."

When you put it like that, I'm sorry I totally understand it now :smiling:

bravery doesn't even have to do with not wanting to live. people just don't have the endurance to go on living a life that pains them so much. what do they even mean by that phrase?

"suicide isn't the answer!" it is, because it'd solve all of my problems. just because it isn't the answer for you doesn't mean it isn't the answer for me.

I'm not saying that it's not a stupid thing to say because obviously it is.....but it's kind of refreshing to have someone recognise that it's courageous to ctb when so many people say it's cowardly.

Well I think the first part of statement is true. It really does take a lot of courage to even go through with the act in the first place in most cases. The way I see it, it's like having to choose between jumping into a pit of spikes (ctb) or having the spikes constantly being poked into you to a lesser, nonfatal degree (continuing to live). Either option sucks but people shouldn't be faulted just because they picked the more terrifying fate to end it sooner.

Courage to live requires hope.
Courage to die requires conviction and a little despair.

The title reminds me of the Suicide Awareness month thread, and a humorous bunch of comments I made about what I imagined for anti-slogan campaigns in other cultures, specifically the one for Germany: "For me, suicide is easy. I will do something harder."

I made the mistake of telling this to someone on Reddit and got downvoted quite a bit....lmao. :meh:

People just don't get it do they? I'm sure your mother has good intentions but you don't tell someone with cancer to just be healthy. It's the same concept.

That's a really good analogy to use when explaining to someone that's never had these thoughts.

When i first read the title, I processed 'live' not as 'to live', but as the adjective 'live', i.e. a broadcast happening now, and I automatically thought of live streams.

So my interpetation of it was '...you should use your bravery to live (stream) your ctb'.

Maybe I'm just weird.
